Today marks the 64th anniversary of the historic achievement of Soviet pilot and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who became the first person to orbit the Earth.
Soviet archive footage shows Gagarin before liftoff and enthusiastic celebrations in Moscow upon his return. After his space mission, Gagarin famously said, βLooking at the Earth from afar, you realize it is too small for conflict and just big enough for cooperation.β
Gagarinβs mission into space propelled him to global fame, making him a worldwide icon. He was also recognized as a hero by the Soviet Union and was awarded the Order of Lenin for his remarkable accomplishments.
