“Capitalism is risking its two sources for generating wealth; humanity and nature.” – emphasized Bolivian President Luis Arce during the Amazon Summit held in the Brazilian city of Belém this week. The Summit was organized by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, who’s trying to repair some of the damage wrought by Bolsonaro’s policy of handing the Amazon over to logging, mining, and drilling interests.
The eight South American countries that have part of the Amazon rainforest in their country took part. The concluding document, the “Belém Declaration,” makes vague commitments to protecting the Amazon but fails to include critical promises such as an end to new drilling for oil and gas, as Colombian President Gustavo Petro proposed.
Nor was there a commitment to end all deforestation by 2030,as proposed by Brazil. However, deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon declined last month the lowest July level since 2017.
