Checklist: Quarantine a bad traffic source without killing the smartlink
One sub-source (sub_id 4471) sent 12% of clicks at $0.03 EPC and triggered an advertiser fraud warning. Pausing the whole smartlink wasn't an option.
What we did:
☐ Step 1: Break EPC by sub_id — 4471 was bottom 1% with a 0.2% conversion rate.
☐ Step 2: Cross-check against a fraud-score feed; 4471 flagged high-bot.
☐ Step 3: Add a routing rule: sub_id=4471 → a safe, low-payout incentive offer (not a premium one).
☐ Step 4: Keep it billable but off the advertiser that complained.
Outcome over 14 days: advertiser fraud warning cleared. Premium-offer conversion rate rose from 1.1% to 1.4% once 4471's junk stopped diluting it. Blended EPC +8%.
Repeat weekly: rank sub_ids by EPC; quarantine the bottom 1% rather than ban outright.

Myth: Pick the highest-EPC offer and route 100% to it
EPC means earnings per click. The advice: find the top one, send everything there.
The correction: a single offer absorbs cap limits, advertiser pauses, and payout cuts with zero buffer. One change and your smartlink dead-ends.
Framework — the 70/20/10 split:
— Step 1: 70% weight to the proven top offer.
— Step 2: 20% to the second-best as live backup with warm data.
— Step 3: 10% to an exploration arm testing new offers.
— Step 4: Reweight only when the explorer beats #2 over 300+ clicks.
Checklist:
☐ No single offer above 75% weight
☐ Backup offer has fresh data (under 7 days old)
☐ Explorer arm always funded
Repeat the reweight review weekly.

Myth: A fallback that never fires means your setup is healthy
Operators brag the fallback chain "never triggers." Sounds like stability.
The correction: a fallback that never fires is untested. The day it's needed, you discover the URL is dead, the geo is wrong, or it loops back to a capped offer.
SOP — fallback fire drill:
— Step 1: Force the primary offline (block its domain locally or set weight 0).
— Step 2: Send 50 test clicks across your top 3 geos.
— Step 3: Confirm each click lands on a live, paying offer — not a 404 or a parked page.
— Step 4: Restore primary, log the result.
Checklist:
☐ Every fallback tier verified live
☐ No tier loops back to a capped/paused offer
☐ Drill timestamped
Repeat the drill monthly, not "when it breaks."

Checklist: The weekly sweep that recovered $190/week of dead weight
Across 12 active smartlinks, nobody had a routine to catch silently-degrading offers. We built one sweep and ran it.
What we did:
☐ Step 1: For every offer slot, pull 7-day EPC and conversion rate.
☐ Step 2: Flag any offer with EPC down >40% week-over-week.
☐ Step 3: Flag any offer at 0 conversions past 300 clicks.
☐ Step 4: Synthetic-click each flagged slot to confirm live vs broken.
☐ Step 5: Pause-and-reweight confirmed-dead slots; re-source replacements.
Outcome: the first sweep caught 7 degrading slots across 12 smartlinks — 3 broken redirects, 4 quietly-paused offers. Reweighting recovered ~$190/week in previously-wasted clicks. Total blended EPC across the portfolio rose from $0.22 to $0.25.
Repeat weekly, same day each week: the value is in catching decay early, not the depth of any single fix.

Checklist: Smartlink QA — synthetic checks vs live traffic sampling
Synthetic QA (you fire test clicks):
☐ Use before launch and after every rule change
☐ Spoof geo via proxy + device via UA override
☐ Covers each branch deterministically — every geo, every fallback
☐ Misses real-world weirdness (carrier IPs, in-app browsers)
Live sampling (inspect real click logs):
☐ Use continuously after launch
☐ Pull 100 random click logs, verify geo→offer mapping by hand
☐ Catches what synthetic can't: real edge cases, bot patterns
Step — Build a synthetic matrix: every geo tier × {iOS, Android, desktop} × {primary, fallback}. Run it as a pre-deploy gate.
Step — Schedule live sampling daily on top campaigns.
Tradeoff: synthetic is repeatable but artificial; live is real but non-deterministic.
Run synthetic on every deploy; live-sample daily.

Myth: Country-level geo rules are precise enough
The belief: route by country code and you've covered geo.
The correction: payout and conversion swing inside a country — tier-1 cities vs rural, English vs regional language, carrier vs WiFi. Country-only routing averages winners and losers into mush.
Framework — geo granularity ladder:
— Step 1: Start at country. Baseline only.
— Step 2: Split by region/state where you have 500+ clicks to justify it.
— Step 3: Add language as a separate axis (browser locale, not geo).
— Step 4: Add connection type (mobile carrier vs WiFi) for offers that care.
Checklist:
☐ Each country with volume reviewed for internal splits
☐ Language treated separately from country
☐ No split created below 500 clicks (avoids noise)
Repeat the granularity review monthly.

SOP: Build a 3-Tier Smartlink Fallback Chain
Goal: never serve a dead click. Set up before any offer goes live.
— Step 1: Define Tier A (primary). Highest payout, tightest cap. Set
— Step 2: Define Tier B (same vertical, looser geo). Trips only on Tier A cap-hit or 0 active offers.
— Step 3: Define Tier C (network-wide catch-all). No geo filter, no cap. This is your floor.
— Step 4: Set chain timeout to 800ms. If a tier doesn't resolve, drop to the next.
— Step 5: Inject a
— Step 6: Force a cap-hit on Tier A in staging. Confirm traffic lands on B, then C.
Never leave Tier C empty. An empty floor = a 404 billed as a click.
Repeat: re-audit the chain weekly when offers rotate.

Myth: Equal weights are the "fair" way to start a test
The instinct: give every new offer the same weight so it's a level field.
The correction: equal weight wastes paid traffic on offers you already know underperform, and starves the proven earner. Fairness is for the offers, not your margin.
SOP — weighted cold start:
— Step 1: Assign 60% to your current best (protect revenue).
— Step 2: Split 40% across new candidates equally — only among the new ones.
— Step 3: After each candidate hits 200 clicks, kill the bottom half.
— Step 4: Reallocate freed weight to survivors, not back to equal.
Checklist:
☐ Proven offer never drops below 50% during a test
☐ Candidates judged at fixed click thresholds, not by date
☐ Losers cut, weight reallocated
Repeat the cull every 200 clicks per candidate.

Google ads
