Sharing a story that puts professors of Economics to shame.

Imagined by a simple writer of stories.
In a way, professors fail to do.

A mind blowing example of why Rich are Rich and Poor Poor.

The story of Captain Samuel Vimes.

Fantasy writer Terry Pratchett wrote a novel “Men at Arms” in 1993.

In the novel, there was a captain by the name of Sam Vimes.

He says that “poverty causes GREATER EXPENSES to the poor than to those who are richer”.

And is the reason poor stay poor.

He explains further.
He says “the reason the RICH were so RICH, was because they managed to SPEND LESS money.”

He takes the example of boots 🥾 🥾
He says that:

“He earned $ 38 a month.

A really good pair of leather boots cost $ 50.

Since he can’t afford them, he wears the pair of boots which are affordable.
These affordable one are sort of OK for a season or two.

And then.
They leak like hell.

This pair costs him about $ 10.
Those affordable ones were the kind of boots Vimes always bought.

And wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell “where he was in the city on a foggy night by the feel of the stones below”.

But here is the thing.

He says good boots lasted for years and years.

A man who could afford $ 50 had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time.
“While the poor man, who could only afford cheap boots, would have spent a 100 $ on boots in the same time and would still have his feet wet.”

This is amazing.
Beautiful.

Why poor keep spending more.
Because they can’t afford better quality products that last.
This has become famous as Captain Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic UNFAIRNESS.

And has been increasingly gaining Economists’ attention.
Once again it also proves the power of fiction.

That, how a writer can present the world so well, the professors seem to fail.

That’s why I encourage all my students to read more literature.

Let me know if you want to hear more such stories.

Would love to share.

A beautiful thread shared by Shekhar sir today on twitter.
