Atacama Desert

What It Is :

- Driest non-polar desert in the world.

- Known for its Mars-like terrain, it is often used by scientists for research on extraterrestrial environments.

- Characterized by extreme aridity and mineral-rich soil.

Location :

- Situated in northern Chile, along the Pacific coast of South America.

- Lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains.

- Borders Peru to the north and extends into the Loa River basin.

Key Physical Features :

Average rainfall:
- Around 2 mm per year some regions have recorded no rain for decades.

Elevation:
- Ranges from sea level to about 13,000 feet (4,000 m) at the Atacama Plateau.

Terrain :
- Includes salt flats (salares), volcanic cones, sand dunes, and alluvial plains.

Temperature :
- Mild due to the cold Humboldt Current, with summer averages around 18–19°C.

Fog (Camanchaca) :
- Formed by Pacific upwelling, providing limited moisture that sustains sparse vegetation.

Durand Line

About :
- International border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

- Total length of about 2,600 km (1,600 miles).

- Established in 1893 through an agreement between Sir Henry Mortimer Durand (British India) and Emir Abdur Rahman Khan (Afghanistan).

- Created to define the spheres of influence between British India and Afghanistan.
Afghanistan never officially recognized the Durand Line as a legitimate border.

Location :
- Extends from the Karakoram Range in the northeast (near China) to the Registan Desert in the southwest (near Iran).

- Passes through key areas like Khyber Pass and the Spīn Ghar Mountains.

- Crosses 12 provinces of Afghanistan and 3 regions of Pakistan - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Geography and Culture :
- Passes through mountains, plateaus, and deserts, including the Khyber Pass and Wakhan Corridor.

- The border region is mainly Pashtun-dominated, with strong tribal, cultural, and family ties across both sides.

- A scenic horseshoe-shaped valley spread over about 79 sq km, surrounded by dense hills.

- The Doodhi River, a tributary of the Narmada, flows through this valley.

- It is inhabited by the Gond and Bharia tribes, both recognized as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

Geology :
- The region dates back to the Archaean eraaround 2.5 billion years ago making it one of the oldest rock formations in India.

- The valley’s rocks include granite gneiss, green schists, and quartz, along with Gondwana sediments like sandstone, shale, and carbonaceous shale.

Cultural and Tourism :
- Every October, the Satpuda Adventure Sports Festival is organized here, promoting tourism, local culture, and community participation.
