Silverpit Crater

[ Places in the news ]

What it is :

- A complex geological structure buried beneath the seabed.

- Confirmed as an asteroid impact crater.

- Provides evidence of undersea asteroid collisions.

Location :

- Located in the North Sea.

Formation :

- Formed about 43–46 million years ago during the Eocene Epoch.

- Created by impact of an asteroid roughly 160 metres wide.

- The impact produced a 1.5-km-high curtain of rock and water.

- The collapse of this plume generated a mega-tsunami estimated to be about 100 metres high.

- Presence of shocked quartz and feldspar crystals confirms an asteroid impact due to extreme pressure conditions.

Key features :

- Central crater is about 3 km wide.

- Surrounded by concentric circular faults forming rings about 20 km in diameter.

- Contains a central peak formed by rebound of the Earth’s crust after the impact.

- Shows a classic structure typical of high-energy meteorite impact sites.
