- Controlled by Britain since 1814 (after being ceded by France).
- In 1965, UK separated Chagos from Mauritius and formed British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).
- Mauritius became independent in 1968 but continued claiming Chagos.
- ICJ later said separation of Chagos from Mauritius was unlawful and decolonisation was incomplete.

- Supports counter-terrorism, surveillance, and military operations across West Asia, South Asia, and East Africa.
