BAT VIRUS GOF MAXIMALISM

They simply called different viruses "variants".
The "variants" were real viruses, yet they were not the products of natural selection, but gain of function experiments, therefore they could lead to new infections.
Covid was the name attributed to any coronavirus infection, some of which attributable to gain of function viruses, others not. In some cases, especially statistical, it was also influenza, but it was not only illness attributed to influenza infection.
In fact, what we called influenza before 2020 was also coronavirus infections, GOF too, so it's the other way round too.
