You like The Smiths? Their early work was a little too post-punk for my personal tastes. But when The Queen Is Dead came out in ‘86, I think they really came into their own, commercially and depressingly. The whole album has a jangly, guitar-driven sound, and a new sheen of Morrissey wailing that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Hitler, but I think Morrissey has a much better art collection.

I think their undisputed masterpiece is the title track; “The Queen Is Dead”. A song so rich in its sublime late twentieth-century anti-monarchical messages, most people don’t even separate the art from the artist! But they should, because it’s not just about the anti-establishment radical motivations of a new generation of genre-pushing-mancuvian-indie-rockstars, it’s also a deep analysis into the poetic duplexity of loneliness versus fame! Hey Robert!
