The Atari VCS, later to be renamed the Atari 2600 was released in September 1977 until 1st January 1992 when production ended.
Although not the first to do so, it popularised games sold on swappable cartridges and an estimated 30 million machines were sold across its lifetime.
Later Atari consoles did not sell as well...
