USGS Mendenhall Post-Doctoral Research Opportunities have now been posted! For the first time this cycle, I'm excited to share that we're listing a Research Opportunity that calls for proposals related to earthquake-induced ground failure (which includes both liquefaction and co-seismic landslides-related research topics). What is a Mendenhall Fellowship? It is a special two-year post-doctoral research fellowship. It's an incredible program for young researchers, and a great opportunity for those interested in continuing their research career beyond their PhD work, particularly as a federal researcher.
Who is a good fit for a Mendenhall? People who are either almost done with their dissertation OR someone who is, at maximum, five years post PhD when they apply for the role. While a PhD is not required to apply, a PhD must be completed before a new Mendenhall Fellow can start work at a USGS office.
How do I apply? The Mendenhall application requires a research proposal to be written. We HIGHLY recommend reaching out to advisors early to start talking about it; they can help you shape your proposal (but not write). We can't do too much last minute, so start working on that proposal early.
How much does it pay? The starting rate for a Mendenhall is at a federal GS-12 level 1. Here is the link to our general pay scale (and check out the locality pay amounts as well). Link

PhD Fellowship position in Visualizing Ground: Developing A Physics-informed Data-driven Integrated Ground Model Towards Lifecycle Management of Offshore Wind Foundation
The Faculty of Technology, Arts and Design (TKD) at OsloMet has a vacant PhD fellowship position in offshore geotechnical engineering. The position will be at the Department of Built Environment.
Qualification requirements and conditions
Master's degree within geotechnical engineering or relevant disciplines. The degree must contain 120 credits (ECTS).
An academic profile that suits the department’s needs.
Good communication skills in English, oral and written.
The following grade requirements are a condition for employment in the position:
Minimum average grade B on subjects included in the master's degree.
Minimum grade B on the master's thesis.
Minimum average grade C on the subjects included in the bachelor's degree. If you have an integrated master's degree, the grades from the first three standard years of the degree will be assessed.
Preferred selection criteria
Process excellent analytical skills.
Have the ability to work independently and systematically in a team.
Are practical and have a strong understanding of engineering concepts.
Can quickly adapt to new environments.
Find joy in working on innovative and exciting projects.

University Professor (Salary Scale W2/W3 NBesG) (m/f/d) ”Safe use of underground space“ at the Institute of Geotechnology and Mineral Resources starting from 01.04.2025
The individual to be appointed must be identified by outstanding research accomplishments in at least one of the following areas:
Risk assessment for underground applications (disposal, storage of CO2 and energy, energy and raw material extraction)
Environmental safety
Methodology of safety analysis
Analytical assessment of the long-term behavior of geotechnical barriers
Probabilistic methods and sensitivity analysis
The applicant must have experience in risk analysis for underground applications and be internationally oriented. In particular, experience in nuclear waste disposal is expected. Experience with sociotechnical issues and holistic planning and governance is an advantage. Likewise, teaching on the safety and risk assessment of uses of underground space and their scientific, mathematical and technical foundations must be designed and offered.
