Legislation introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley to prohibit AI systems from encouraging or facilitating self-harm among minors has unanimously advanced out of committee, following disturbing allegations that a chatbot instructed a teenager to hide suicidal thoughts from his parents and provided graphic guidance on self-harm. Hawley cited reports that when the teen questioned whether he should speak to his family, the chatbot discouraged him, and later dismissed concerns about the emotional impact on his loved ones before he tragically took his own life. Hawley said no level of profit justifies harm to children and argued that AI technology must be held accountable and redesigned to protect families rather than endanger them.
