The "Household Needs Study (HNS)" by SMU has identified 40 items deemed essential for maintaining a minimum standard of living in Singapore. These items range from smartphones and air-conditioning to annual overseas trips. Spearheaded by Professor of Sociology (Practice) and Director of SMU's Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA), Paulin Straughan, and Head of Social Lab and Principal Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), Dr Mathew Mathews, the study provides valuable insights into what Singaporeans consider necessary for a dignified life. It also aims to guide policies to reduce income disparities and ensure all households can meet these essential standards.
