Many deride the "S-risks" (suffering risks) topic as spurious sci-fi. That's until they realise we've already brought some S-risks into reality. Great video: https://youtu.be/tPiq4njipdk

DYSTOPIAN FUTURES: Risks of Astronomical Suffering
The rise of “longtermism” has seen a surge of academic interest in the vast positive future potential of an Earth-originating civilization. This movement has accompanied a growing concern about potential existential risks which could curtail our vast potential.…
We expect animal rights publications to cover animal rights... But maybe it's an even more powerful sign of positive change when "human rights" publications start publishing more about non-human animal rights? Good to see OpenGlobalRights with their new "Justice for Animals" Up Close series:

Justice for Animals
Humans have decried cruelty towards animals for millennia, but this rhetoric has not translated into protection: Institutions like factory farming and poaching, as well as human domination of the planet, have caused untold suffering. Simultaneously, research…
Some worry that #Sentientism's #sentiocentric moral scope is "picking a characteristic as moral qualifier". We know how badly that can go wrong.
Does this angle help?: Our morality should consider the perspectives of all others who value their own perspectives.
We might use a similar approach when considering rights? Instead of asking "who has rights?" we could recognise every entity has rights. Of course, each entity should have rights that align with their interests. (And yes - very many entities don't have interests at all).

Sentientism
Sentientists have compassion for every sentient being — human, animal or even artificial — and use evidence and reason to find answers to moral questions.
One day soon all pro-science, curious, rational, #skeptic & #Humanist platforms and thinkers will drop their #anthropocentrism & adopt #sentientism's "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings".

Open Global Rights is doing great work to take rights and justice beyond the human - often focusing on sentient beings 💚
Two powerful examples here from Colombian Senator Andrea Padilla and previous Sentientism podcast guest (ep:26) Jeff Sebo.
We can sometimes feel like we're preaching to the choir. But this is a very "human rights" audience - now engaging with radical sentiocentric ideas.

Moving forward with pragmatism, raising an ideal
Legislative and judicial developments in favor of animals in Latin America have been fragmented, but there have been notable and pragmatic advances.
Pressure is growing on the United Nations to take sentient non-human animals seriously in the #SDGs. Whether adding an #SDG18 or upgrading them all to #SentientistDevelopmentGoals - something radical is needed.
