“…our whole human understanding – that should be changing on a regular basis and with that we then need to go ‘I need to re-boot my worldview’” - Comedian and Humanists UK Patron Robin Ince

Sentience evolved because it was adaptive to be able to feel – to experience suffering and flourishing.
But as soon as we (and here I mean all sentient beings) could feel, we started to make decisions that weren’t just about propagating our genes.
We started to make decisions because we cared about ourselves and later, about others.
Today the biggest threat to #sentientity is humanity.
Instead, we could choose to be its greatest hope.

If we care about a sentient being… we have compassion or moral consideration for them… we want them treated humanely…

What is our minimal moral obligation to them? What most basic rights do they have? What core limits are there on what we should or should not do to them?
If phenomenal consciousness is an illusion does that destroy ethics or extend it? A great article by Keith Frankish linking two deep Sentientism themes... philosophy of mind (what is consciousness?) and the extension of moral scope way beyond humanity. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12152-024-09562-5
Looking forward to speaking about the Sentientism worldview at this conference for maybe the most important people 🤩... the teachers helping young people explore, examine and maybe even choose or change worldviews. https://chesterdbe.co.uk/re-conference-2025 #ReTeach #SentientistEducation
