One question I get asked a lot is: how come healthcare professionals can’t see the reality?

A very valid question, one I ponder frequently.

On reflection of my experience and observation, I surmise that some of the following entrenched behaviours may partially explain our current dilemma. This post will offend many, but this is my post and MY OPINION.

1- authoritative belief: Most, but not all, believe they are the authority and more informed than the general public in terms of all things health and society in that effect, despite possessing very little critical appraisal and analyses of information and observation. Most of us would never admit we are wrong despite instinctive nagging or evidence to the contrary, Something I called the “expert effect” or arrogance. I used to be in that trap.

2- group think: Of late, there is a perception that clinicians are serving the NHS for organisational perpetuity than serving the public. Most guidelines and protocols handed down from Department of Health and NHS England are accepted without much critical debate or appraisal. This approach would usually ensure some financial reward and libel security, where organisations are backed up by the NHS’s indemnity structure, and clinicians can deflect difficult questions or queries behind closed doors due to “oh it’s our policy”. There is, undoubtedly, strength in tribal behaviour.

3- pathological belief: It’s very difficult for most people, especially alpha type personality to ever admit wrong doing or lack of knowledge and/or competence. Doing so will be admission of guilt and liability, which could have career changing consequences.

4- altruistic vs ulterior motive: My believe is that at time of crisis, most will forfeit principles to safeguard security and survival as an instinctive behaviour. Take GPs for example, if they didn’t agree to undertake vaccine program with pre-determine KPI (key performance indicators) and without opt-out option, the consequence of non-compliance is financial hardship at best, and loss of right to practice at worst. Most NHS Trusts are in the red and will do anything to ensure adequate income. Perversely, the main source of income is DoH dictated by politicians, who until recently couldn’t unilaterally rule by decree but that changed in 2020.

5- inadequate life skill training: While we are highly trained over a prolonged period, we are trained to implement but not to think independently and critically. One thing I used to do with my trainees is question management protocol taught to them, but challenge them to assess the underlying reasons and research. All, without failure, can never cite the rationale or research apart from “that’s in the text book” or “NICE protocol”. It usually takes a significant event (eg a death or significant harm) resulting in serious disciplinary or libel action before a clinician would be forced to reflect on this.

Sorry for the long rant. I am very frustrated with my peers and politicians in turning our wonderful democracy into a dystopian nightmare, and harming countless souls unnecessarily along the way.

This has gone too far now. Vaccination Teams told children 12-15 WILL be vaccinated Against their parents wishes, in schools.

“If a parent objects to their child being vaccinated but the child wants to be vaccinated and is judged to be Gillick competent, the healthcare professional will try to reach agreement between the parent and child. However, the parent cannot overrule the decision of a Gillick competent child,” the guidelines state. In that scenario the child will be vaccinated.”
