Many Neo Buddhists say that Sarmanes actually mentioned in the Megasthenes indica are Buddhists.
Let's check the facts
Special features of them :
1. Believers of Yama ( Hades )
2. Used to have Rice and barley as main food ( described in Manusmriti 6.11-13 )
3. Excellent doctors ( experts in Naturopathy )
4. Often called by Kings to discuss pleasing the God.
Well Mahayan wasn't there at that time and neither was Vajrayan. They have gods like Yama & hence they can't be Buddhist.
Elphinstone already said they were mainly Sanyasi. He also said that Buddhism wasn't expressly noticed by Greeks.
Colebrook said : Brahmins and Sarmanes are different. And Buddhists are clearly distinguished from both of them.
They were Sanyasis and ascetics of different tribes and the term Sarmanes , was later used for Jains. Undoubtedly also from any sects of Hindus.
First one who distinguished b/w them was Clement of Alexandria of 2nd Century CE , and was first to talk about Buddhist stupas.
