A crash in the biggest debt market in the world, the US mortgage market would be fatal for the world. There is some reason to be fearful. Particularly if Trump loses the election.

The Defund the police mantra has caused nearly 20% of houses to be for sale in some major economic cities in America. Given the identity politics in America,some black Americans believe that they cannot get a mortgage because of the colour of their skin.

I could see a Biden presidency making the same mistakes as the 1990s Clinton Administration who are directly attributable for the 2008 financial crisis. Whereby the government bullied banks into giving people mortgages who could not afford them aided through agencies such as Fannie Mac demanding that the lending institutions that it dealt with prove that they were not redlining and fulfill a quota of minority mortgage lending. This in turn meant that the lending agencies would have to lower their standards in terms of such things as down payments and the required incomes. These subprime borrowers would be charged a higher interest rates and default. The banks would later capatilise the gains and socialise the loses. It’s frightening that this is an untold story of our recent past. We added trillions of debt onto government balance sheets. We paid for the financial crisis and for what? We never learnt our lesson.
