India's rivers are classified into four groups: Himalayan rivers, Deccan rivers, Coastal rivers.
๐ Himalayan Rivers: These are fed by melting snow & glaciers, ensuring year-round flow. During the monsoon, they swell and cause floods. The major systems are the Indus & Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna.
๐ Deccan Rivers: These rivers are rain-fed, causing fluctuation in water levels and many being non-perennial. Major rivers like the Godavari, Krishna, & Mahanadi flow eastward into the Bay of Bengal, while the Narmada and Tapti flow westward into the Arabian Sea.
๐ Coastal Rivers: These are short and mostly non-perennial, found along the west coast with limited catchment areas.
