It is a strategic basaltic plateau in the southwest corner of Syria. It is bordered by the Yarmouk River in the south, the Sea of Galilee and Hula Valley in the west, the Anti-Lebanon mountains with Mount Hermon in the north, and Wadi Raqqad in the east.
Two thirds of the area was occupied by Israel following the 1967 Six-Day War and then effectively annexed in 1981, which was rejected by the international community that continues to consider the territory as Syrian and under Israeli occupation.

โ India is one of the contracting parties to the Ramsar Convention, which was signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.
โ The country became a signatory in 1982.
โ Between 1982 and 2013, 26 sites in India were designated as Ramsar sites.
โ From 2014 to 2024, India has added 59 new wetlands to this prestigious list, showcasing its ongoing dedication to wetland conservation.
๐ Current Stats:
1. Tamil Nadu leads with the highest number of Ramsar sites (18), followed by Uttar Pradesh (10).
2. Indiaโs Ramsar wetlands cover about 10% of the total wetland area across 18 states.
While Indiaโs sheer size and biodiversity contribute to its impressive count, globally, the United Kingdom (175 sites) and Mexico (142 sites) hold the highest number of Ramsar sites.
Bolivia has the largest area under Ramsar protection, spanning 148,000 sq. km.
