Towards RF communication and multiple access protocols in a body sensor network

Abstract
A Body Senor Network (BSN) allows the integration of miniaturized, intelligent, low power,invasive, and non-invasive wireless sensor nodes to monitor body function and the surrounding environment. The inclusion of wireless sensor nodes within the body requires many more constraints to be met for safe and reliable operations. In this paper, we first study the possibility of Radio Frequency (RF)communication to an implanted device. Then we provide a simulation study of various multiple access protocols for a non-invasive BSN. For RF communication, we use a Perspex tank that mimics the electrical properties of the body at 400MHz. The results show that the implant reveals best performance at 3cm depth and not close to the surface of the skin. Furthermore, we analyze the performance of a Preamble-Based TDMA (PB-TDMA), S-MAC, and IEEE 802.15.4 protocols for a non-invasive BSN using NS-2. Simulation results show that IEEE 802.15.4,when configured in a beacon-enabled mode, performs better than S-MAC and PB-TDMA. Our results also suggest the design and implementation of a new low- power multiple access protocol for invasive and non-invasive BSN.

Reliance on data

The technologies and applications featuring biodigital convergence will not be able to operate without a lot of data. For example, the field of bioinformatics uses digital tools and data analysis to understand biological systems,59 including deploying deep learning algorithms to analyze images of cells to detect patterns that humans would find impossible to discern.60 Techniques such as next-generation gene sequencing are hugely data intense, creating new challenges with sharing, archiving, integrating, and analyzing this data.61

The global bioinformatics market is projected to grow from 7.73 billion USD in 2018 to 13.50 billion USD in 2023, at a compound annual growth rate of 14.5%.62 The rate of data growth to fuel this expansion could exceed this.

The data required is highly varied. Upstream of the production processes, data may also be an important asset in the form of genomes, phenotypes, and environmental contexts of a diverse set of humans and a wide range of unique organisms. Bioprospecting is already an important aspect of drug development, and may rise in importance – and provoke greater controversy in healthcare.

The full potential of biodigital convergence may therefore require a constant flow of data. Capturing, managing, sharing, and governing this data could become a resource-intensive process and a more highly developed industry in itself.

What would be an example about military use in the context of BioDigital Convergence?

One instance, would come from unaccountability stemming from events where there is proof of liability for a military crime where soldiers would get an impunity sentence because they would cite human augmentation as legal excuse (exception) and it creates a gap in the regulatory field with grave ethical consequences.

The Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) doesn't cover a situation where soldiers use human augmentation through exoskeletons and nano Biodigital Convergence. Convergence technologies can be used for good military applications but the unwanted result would come from dual-use in case it would serve to expand the potential harm of terror industry

How “5G” and Geoengineering are Linked

In earlier iterations, fire alarms only sent a signal when fire was detected. Society drunk on wireless has been led by an industry drunk on power and profits to accept technology such as smart meters that send and receive signals thousands of times per day in a mesh, simply to maintain the integrity of the network, creating a massive planetary footprint collecting, transmitting, and storing useless data. Surveillance and control are the unacknowledged downsides. SpaceX satellites leaking radio waves. Astronomers worried.

On July 5, 2023, astronomers from various institutions announced that their new study has detected “unintended electromagnetic radiation” emanating from the onboard electronics of the controversial Starlink satellites. They said this measurable leakage from the satellites – which make up SpaceX’s giant satellite constellations – might already be interfering with the science of radio astronomy.

These low-orbit satellites not only already contaminate our night skies and interfere with astronomy but also promise to flood Earth with powerful, focused electromagnetic beams that emit radiofrequency (RF) and microwave radiation proven to adversely affect the health of humans, animals and plants. The satellites also may have an impact on Earth’s natural electromagnetic field—essential to all life on our planet—yet no national or international agency has taken action to evaluate, reduce, prevent or publicize the environmental impact of the satellites’ emissions. Meanwhile, significant effects are already occurring.

The FCC has never assessed the impact of radiation emissions from 50,000 satellites or any other existing and potential adverse environmental effects.

FCC complicity

Satellite companies must submit applications to the FCC because satellites use radiofrequencies that are under the agency’s purview. Just like other federal agencies, the FCC is subject to National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements, established in 1970, to develop rules enabling it to evaluate the environmental effects of its actions. To meet its procedural responsibilities under NEPA as well as stipulations of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, the FCC, in 1996, adopted non-mandatory exposure standards for wireless radiation. These standards are highly flawed because they only acknowledge thermal but not non-thermal harms and ignore the established harms of pulsed and modulated signals. Moreover, there are no penalties for exceeding the standards.

The FCC has never assessed the impact of radiation emissions from 50,000 satellites or any other existing and potential adverse environmental effects. The likely reason is that the FCC interprets its obligations as only requiring assessment of terrestrial activities and devices due to legal language specifying that it focus on structures defined as a “pole, tower, base station, or other building”—with no explicit mention of satellites.

As a result, the FCC has felt free to approve (without any environmental assessment) close to 12,000 SpaceX satellites so far, and SpaceX has filed paperwork with the FCC for another 30,000. Of the 12,000, the company initially proposed placing 4,425 into low-Earth-orbit (between 715 and 823 miles above the planet’s surface) but later amended its application to put about a third of those in a lower 342-mile orbit. The remaining 7,500-plus satellites have permission to go into “very low” Earth orbit—that is, altitudes barely more than 200 miles above the Earth. According to SpaceX, these ultra-low-orbit satellites are necessary to reduce latency and increase transmission speeds in congested cities, while also enabling the company to extend Wi-Fi coverage globally.

As if radiation from tens of thousands of satellites were not concerning enough, the FCC’s blanket license for up to a million ground transmitters allows SpaceX Services (a SpaceX subsidiary) to install terminals that will use “advanced beamforming and steerable antenna technology” to wirelessly connect end-users (human and machine) on the ground with the orbiting satellites. These “consumer-facing device[s]” could place radiation-emitting terminals directly in homes. Elon Musk summarizes the two-step installation of the ground antenna as “point at sky [and] plug in.”

The Starlink satellite constellations operate in the portion of the microwave frequencies spectrum called the “ku-band” (11-17 GHz); the ground stations would transmit at 14-14.5 GHz while receiving signals from the satellites at 10.7-12.7 GHz. This is vastly different from current LTE networks, which operate from 700 MHz to around 6 GHz.

Indigenous perspectives on the Biodigital Convergence

Abstract
The biodigital convergence describes the intersection, and in some cases merging, of biological and digital technologies. Biodigital technologies include mRNA vaccines used to treat COVID-19, digitally controlled surveillance insects, microorganisms genetically engineered to produce medicinal compounds, and more. While significant scholarship has been paid to the ethical dimensions of biodigital technologies from a Western standpoint, little attention has focused on Indigenous views on the biodigital convergence. In this article, we explore the biodigital convergence from a Haudenosaunee perspective and suggest that insights from Indigenous philosophical traditions—specifically regarding relationality and territory—may be necessary for humanity to adapt to the profound and existential changes implicit in the biodigital convergence.

Are humans the next critical infrastructure sector?

Currently, humanity is being augmented or networked by somewhere around 14 billion connected devices and that number is increasing at an accelerating rate. The rate of growth implies a growing comfort with networked, wearable, and implanted devices – and our connectivity with them. Over the past decade, our work has exposed us to some amazing human-integrated technology advances across a number of industries. We’ve seen need and a desire for longer, healthier lives driving many of the bio-digital developments that evolved quickly from bleeding-edge innovation to ubiquitous use. Implantable Internet of Things (IoT) devices like pacemakers, defibrillators, and insulin pumps are perfect examples – each external, electronic device has the potential to supplement or repair a deficiency that would otherwise shorten or even end someone’s life.


Already, we rely on enhanced biometric security to connect us to elements of IoT, smartphones, and computers. With this incredible progress and possibility for human connected technology to improve and extend lives comes the even greater potential for a threat like the ability for adversaries to manipulate these technologies.

To defeat the threat of tomorrow, we cannot afford to be reactive.

Through conferences and client meetings, Toffler Associates has engaged in conversations with a variety of relevant experts from industry, academia, and government regarding both the potential and risk of implantable and wearable technologies. What we’ve heard is a general lack of consistency around how to weigh the potential benefits and risks of innovation.
In one conference, representatives from academia and the medical technology industry were discussing implantable medical technologies they were developing. These representatives explained that they don’t typically consider the possible vulnerabilities (i.e., hacking) that could accompany these emerging devices because their focus was on the life-saving roles these innovations promised.

In another, we discussed the ability of criminals and terrorists to attack parts of urban environments by remotely controlling or shocking people’s pacemakers and defibrillators. We also examined the threat of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) devices that can block all signals or destroy all electronics, including wearable and implantable devices, within set distances.
To combat tomorrow’s enemy, we need to develop a proactive approach that includes viewing the human as critical infrastructure
Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defines 16 sectors as Critical Infrastructure, including Dams, Water and Wastewater Systems, Communications, and Energy. As humans and technology become more deeply intertwined, we should consider the inclusion of a 17th Critical Infrastructure sector focused on protecting citizens against hacking and other manipulation that could put lives at risk.

As our society relies on a cyber foundation for our daily lives, we subject ourselves to dangerous, potentially life-threatening risks. As we literally link our bodies to this cyber foundation, we must look farther than the promise that prompted the innovation to enhance our understanding of the potential negative implications.
