Molecular Communications
In a molecular communications system, information is produced, propagated and received by cell-based nanoscale devices [5]. For example, cells can produce proteins and nucleic acids, i.e. molecular information, and freely diffuse or transport them by exosomes (small membrane vesicles of endocytic origin) for the stimulation of cellular immune responses in vivo
Due to the diversity of natural systems that can inspire the design of these molecular communications systems, different natural cellular signalling processes have been investigated in the past twenty years, such as action potential and quorum sensing, and the characteristics of those natural systems define the requirements for the nanonetwork architecture [7]. Therefore, nanoscale devices, that are specific for each system, are built to encode and transmit molecular signal through a communications channel(e.g. fluid media) towards a nanoscale receiver that will retrieve the original molecular information. To encode a molecular information, scientists can change the structure of the molecule, the gene sequence information or the concentration of information in the propagated molecular signal. At the receiver side, the molecular signal is decoded resulting on the extraction of the original information produced by the nanoscale transmitter[8, 9]. These processes are representations of the chemical reactions required to produce, propagate and receive molecular signals within a nanonetwork.

Converging Technologies for Improving Human Performance (2002)
NANOTECHNOLOGY, BIOTECHNOLOGY, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND COGNITIVE SCIENCE
The phrase “convergent technologies” refers to the synergistic combination of four major “NBIC” (nano-bio-info-cogno) provinces of science and technology, each of which is currently progressing at a rapid rate: (a) nanoscience and nanotechnology; (b) biotechnology and biomedicine, including genetic engineering;
(c) information technology, including advanced computing and communications;
and (d) cognitive science, including cognitive neuroscience.
Each of the four research challenges described above focuses on one of the NBIC areas (nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and cognitive science) and shows how progress can be catalyzed by convergence with the other areas. The complementarity of the four NBIC areas is suggested by the statement of workshop participant W.A. Wallace:
"If the Cognitive Scientists can think it
the Nano people can build it
the Bio people can implement it, and
the IT people can monitor and control it"

Ethical Issues in NanoBiotechnology
Published 1 April 2015 - Engineering, Biology
International Journal for Scientific Research and Development
An analysis of research students' perspectives concerning ethical issues associated with nanotechnology research reveals that issues related to Medical field is the first ethical challenge in nanobiotechnology followed by Environmental issues, Health and Safety issues, and Societal issues.
Abstract
Bionanotechnology, nanobiotechnology and nanobiology are terms that refer to the intersection of nanotechnology and biology. The subject is one that has only emerged very recently, nanobiotechnology serve as blanket terms for various related technologies. Nanoethics "concerns ethical and social issues associated with developments in nanotechnology". Nano biotechnology represents a rapidly growing field of interest and has a wide variety of applications. However, as with nanotechnology and biotechnology, bionanotechnology does have many potential ethical issues associated with it. Nano2Life ELSA (2006) board has identified some potential issues more specific to nanobiotechnology. Because of the wide gap between the basic science and many of the still speculative predictions, nanobiotechnologies are presented in a future oriented way, which itself poses the first ethical challenge. The ethical issues concerned with nanobiotechnologies are related to Health, Safety, Medical, Legal, Social and Environmental issues. Other ethical issues include Governance of Research, Economic Displacements, Anthropological Aspects and Transhumanists. Most issues on nanobiotechnology are still at its infancy and inconclusive. Thus, nanobiotechnologies act as enabling technologies that widen and sharpen the impact of existing issues. The current paper deals with an analysis of research students' perspectives concerning ethical issues associated with nanotechnology research. The study reveals that issues related to Medical field (40%) is the first ethical challenge in nanobiotechnology followed by Environmental issues (30%), Health and Safety issues (20%) and Societal issues (10%). Most of the respondents believe that nanobiotechnology will pose more risks (50 - 90%) to human health rather than benefits (25%). Therefore, it is important to encourage ethics researchers to produce quality research proposals on ethical issues and to have the public involved in the discussion of the social impact of nanotechnology.

5G networks, that are either already introduced or are about to be implemented in many countries, although representing a large step forward, technologically speaking, come burdened with a number of problems and controversies.
5G is necessary to create “connected smart cities” – an idea that in and of itself faces criticism and opposition.
A major controversy is related to the undermining of citizen’s privacy while using devices that connect through the new generation network. A specific concern is collection of location data. Not that the existing types of cellular networks don’t already represent a privacy nightmare in terms of location tracking, and potential for mass surveillance stemming from it.
But 5G’s capabilities are on another level, in that people’s location is pinpointed with far greater accuracy than is the case with 4G networks. This is the result of the design of 5G towers, which are significantly smaller and much more numerous. - https://www.lifesitenews.com/opinion/the-promises-of-5g-are-not-worth-the-cost-to-security-and-liberty-heres-why/

Unlike 4G towers that cover large areas, 5G towers are smaller and more numerous, allowing for precise location tracking. This data can be accessed by government agencies, ISPs, and data brokers, exacerbating privacy issues.

As with the gas stove “debate,” any questioning of the latest coolest way to reorganize society is a sign of madness.
Energy is the crux of economic growth and development; therefore, a reliable supply of power is a critical prerequisite for the successful operation of smart city initiatives.
The impact of the energy crisis on smart cities, which are still recovering from the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic, has been far-reaching and is having major consequences for businesses, households, and individuals – thereby affecting everyone.
Smart cities are complex and interconnected because they are composed of various sectors, ranging from the manufacturing industry, education, healthcare, transport and the business sector. Since the start of load-shedding many businesses that were attracted to the cities because of well-functioning smarter infrastructure that lowers operating costs, have had to close or down-scale their employee numbers. In Johannesburg, a Wimpy franchise that has been operating in the Fordsburg area for over five decades has had to permanently close down due to persistent power cuts.
In a conversation with News24, the franchise owner Mr. Ebrahim says, “load-shedding has broken our back, people avoid areas where there is load-shedding or reschedule their day according to the load-shedding schedule, such measures draw business away.”

“LEAN ICT: TOWARDS DIGITAL SOBRIETY”: OUR NEW REPORT ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ICT
The energy consumption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is increasing by 9% every year. It is possible to limit this growth to 1.5% per year by moving to sober digital practices. The digital transition as it is currently implemented participates to global warming more than it helps preventing it. The need for action is therefore urgent. Such is the main conclusion of the carbon transition think tank The Shift Project’s report on the environmental impact of ICT. If we do not tackle this impact, ICT will be part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

USA: Take Action to Prevent the Next Wireless Invasion – Stop the American Broadband Deployment Act of 2023 from Being Enacted
A new federal bill that threatens to eliminate all state and local control in cell tower and small cell placements is making its way through Congress. Proposed bill H.R. 3557 aims to expedite the deployment of wireless and other communications facilities through a massive federal power grab that strips away state and local control in permitting and regulatory review processes – the very mechanisms designed to protect citizens from the threats posed by wireless facilities.
If H.R. 3557 passes, it will result in a truly unrestricted proliferation of cell towers and small cell installations near schools, playgrounds, and homes without any local or community input.
