The race to 5G and proliferation of wireless networks is increasing artificial electromagnetic exposures to wildlife worldwide. Cell towers are being erected in national parks, wilderness areas, and urban and suburban ecosystems, even though scientific research indicates numerous harmful effects to wildlife at incredibly low exposure levels. Pollinators are uniquely impacted due to their size.

This webinar will feature a series of flash talks and then a Q & A with international experts who have published in the field of wireless communications and environmental impacts, and funders who are investing in solutions for safer technology.

Speakers:
Albert M. Manville, II PhD. will present his latest paper Effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields on flora and fauna. He is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and Senior Lecturer and Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University.

B. Blake Levitt is an award-winning medical/science journalist, author, and editor who has researched the biological effects of nonionizing radiation since the late 1970's. She has participated in congressional briefings and published numerous peer-reviewed articles in the field, including as co-author of the recent reviews on EMF and wildlife impacts.

Dr. Cornelia Waldmann-Selsam will present on the impact of radiofrequency radiation to trees, sharing the findings of her published research, along with an updated report on her latest research.

Daniel Favre, PhD., Wildlife Biologist, will present his research, "Mobile phone-induced honeybee worker piping" He is president of the nonprofit organization, Alerte Romande aux Rayonnements Artificiels (A.R.R.A, http://www.alerte.ch).

Erica Rosenberg, retired Assistant Chief of the Competition and Infrastructure Policy Division at the Federal Communications Commission will share highlights of her article Environmental Procedures at the FCC: A Case Study in Corporate Capture.

Devra Davis PhD, President of Environmental Health Trust will present on her published research on the impact of wireless to plants and give an update on the lawsuit against the FCC related to environmental impacts.

Theodora Scarato, Executive Director of Environmental Health Trust, will present on current regulations related to environmental impacts and the regulations needed to address regulatory gaps in the United States and internationally.

Katie Alvord (aka Kate) is a director for a small family foundation focused on health and environmental giving. She has worked as a freelance writer and is a science journalism award winner for her past coverage of climate change. Katie’s comments will address the importance of considering wireless radiation impacts when making environmental grants.

Lendri Purcell, MA, BCET, is the Co-president of Jonas Philanthropies and the President and Co-founder of Families Advocating for Chemical and Toxics Safety.

Robobug: Scientists clad bacterium with graphene to make a working cytobot

By cladding a living cell with graphene quantum dots, researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) claim to have created a nanoscale biomicrorobot (or cytobot) that responds electrically to changes in its environment. This work promises to lay the foundations for future generations of bio-derived nanobots, biomicrorobotic-mechanisms, and micromechanical actuation for a wide range of applications.
The UIC team has dubbed its creation NERD (short for Nano-Electro-Robotic Device). The cytobot is built on a bacterial spore – more specifically, an endospore – which is essentially a dormant version of a bacterium.

Endospores are strong, tough, and exceptionally responsive to liquid water, making them ideal candidates for micromechanical manipulation. The responsiveness to water, in particular, is an important aspect because it can be exploited in such microorganisms to achieve bio-actuated functionality.
In other words, scientists can use a range of naturally-occurring functions of these organisms as they respond to their environment to operate miniscule devices.
"This is a fascinating device," said Vikas Berry, UIC associate professor and principal investigator on the study. "Here we have a biological entity. We’ve made the sensor on the surface of these spores, with the spore a very active complement to this device. The biological complement is actually working towards responding to stimuli and providing information."

The researchers also documented that the response was approximately 10 times faster than artificial humidity sensors currently manufactured, even with the best synthetic water-absorbing polymers known. They noted, too, that the electro-biomechanical device that the team created appeared to have improved sensitivity in exceptionally low-pressure, low-humidity environments compared to the artificial sensor. The practical upshot of this work, according to the researchers, is that it may exploit the unique biomolecular structure of micro-organisms in a way that achieves both controlled nanoscale architecture and membrane transport for micromechanical actuation. For anyone who's been hibernating this decade, we're currently about three or four years into the fifth of these generations (5G), which means everyone should naturally expect 6G to emerge from the womb of the industry in about 2030. “Specific concerns from the residents target the studies revealing millimeter wave frequency harm to pollinators. As agricultural communities, voters want to be convinced that their crops will not suffer if the myriad of 5G transmitters negatively affect the bees. Their warrant asks for input from scientists who are independent from the telecom industry, who can give an unbiased report. The petitioners related telecom’s rollout of 5G without sufficient research as similar to big tobacco’s promotion of cigarettes. It was years later and many cancer deaths before regulations were enacted limiting smoking in public places and adding warning labels to packaging. Voters spoke out that “we want to know for sure a similar fate will not bestow residents where electro-hypersensitivity syndrome becomes the norm with no recourse to remove the transmitters causing the problem.”

4 Studies Add to Evidence of Wireless Technology-Related Electromagnetic Radiation in Humans - New studies from Sweden, China, Australia and the U.K. shed light on human exposure to electromagnetic radiation from wireless technologies, but the authors of one study alleged industry tried to censor their research, and in another case, critics accused researchers of having conflicts of interest with the telecom industry.

In the first example, an international peer-reviewed journal — Annals of Case Reports — on Jan. 10 published a Swedish case report showing 5G radiation causes symptoms indicative of “microwave syndrome.”

The telecom industry initially attempted to censor the article, the study authors said.

Dr. Lennart Hardell, Ph.D, retired professor of oncology at the Örebro University Hospital in Sweden, and Mona Nilsson, managing director of the Swedish Radiation Protection Foundation, co-authored the report.

Nilsson told The Defender, “The telecom companies tried to censor the article” in spring 2022 after the study initially appeared in a Swedish medical magazine.

“A representative of the Ericsson company — the world leading 5G infrastructure provider — and the umbrella organization for 1,200 tech companies, all the major telecom companies in Sweden, wrote to the editor of the Swedish magazine and asked him to withdraw the article,” she explained.

Development of the Microwave Syndrome in Two Men Shortly after Installation of 5G on the Roof above their Office
A case study of 2 men who developed microwave syndrome after 5G cell antennas were placed on the rooftop of the building where these 2 men worked and lived, with both developing symptoms of headache, tinnitus, dizziness, balance disorder, early wake-up, concentration and attention deficiency, lung problems/dyspnea/cough, and fatigue. Additionally, one of the men also developed anxiety/panic, insomnia, and hair loss, while the other also developed athralgia and skin problems with burning sensations.
The highest (peak) level of radiation, 1,118,000 µW/m2 (= 111.8 µW/cm2), occurred right below the 5G antennas, in the office of one of the men. After the men moved to the country or to much lower exposure areas that were about 200 times lower or more, their symptoms diminished or they recovered.
While this level is very high, it is still below the ICNIRP and FCC exposure guidelines of 1000 uW/cm2, which protect only against heating damage to tissues and not against any other biological effects like neurodegeneration and immune system effects which have been documented in thousands of studies that show such effects below government's thermal exposure guidelines.

Wildlife and Biodiversity: A Disappearing Act by Cell Towers on Land and in Space? - Calling all environmentalists! The most important peer reviewed article to date on environmental effects of wireless radiofrequency radiation was just published and deserves a full read. What do we know about wireless radiation effects on the natural environment? This comprehensive 3 part review by Levitt, Lai and Manville (2021) provides a wealth of scientific information, connecting the scientific dots of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) harm to flora and fauna. In a very readable text the authors answer many puzzling questions about this complex subject that combines biology, ecology, technology and physics. ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Armed with an astronomical amount of data generated from the 5G-enabled Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Cities, and Smart Regions, industry claims we will be better equipped to save energy. But what they fail to include in their analyses is the mega energy footprint of all these internet-connected things humming and buzzing 24/7. It is not at all clear that the IoT will ever succeed in offsetting its own fast growing and unbounded energy footprint.

Not considered are:

The energy consumed by all the constantly-communicating “things” machines, applications, sensors, surveillance cameras, etc.
The astronomical amount of energy needed to manufacture all these IoT things, devices and accompanying infrastructure (embodied energy).
The CO2 released into the atmosphere from the energy used to power the proliferating wireless sources. Most of this energy is generated from fossil fuels.
The energy required to power enormously energy consumptive data centers.
The excess energy needed to move data wirelessly through the air rather than more efficiently and effectively through fiber or cable.
The energy required for global travel to assemble devices (c.500,000 miles for one iPhone)

Power consumption of the 5G network is expected to soar due to active network elements like energy-hungry baseband units, remote radio heads, small cells, and core networks.
