World Pharmacists Day is celebrated annually on September 25 to highlight the important role pharmacists play in improving health outcomes.
This year is commemorated under the theme: “Think Health, Think Pharmacist.”
Worldwide, the health workforce dedicated to improving clinical care includes pharmacists. As members of multidisciplinary teams, their roles range from routine clinical activities in healthcare settings to advanced drug research and investigations.
In hospitals, pharmacists ensure the availability of lifesaving medicines and medical devices. At the final stage of patient care, they provide essential counseling and guidance on medicines to support better recovery and outcomes. Every day, they practice good dispensing standards to deliver medications safely. When dermatologists prescribe medicines, pharmacists apply their expertise in compounding with precision and skill. Surgeons consult pharmacists before operations—“Is the Vicryl available?”—while anesthesiologists rely on them for agents such as isoflurane.
The role of pharmacists in hospitals is therefore critical for patient safety and improved outcomes. Clinical services without pharmacists would put both lives and health systems at risk.
To prevent returning to the “dark ages” of medicine, pharmacists play a key role in guiding the responsible use of antibiotics and in combating antimicrobial resistance.
In the community, pharmacists remain at the forefront, equipped with the knowledge and resources to address public health challenges and fight the spread of disease.
In research, from preclinical drug studies to clinical development and evaluation, pharmacists with advanced training significantly contribute to the discovery of new treatments.
I thank all pharmacists for their indispensable contributions to patients and to the health system as a whole.

On this World Pharmacists Day, celebrated under the inspiring theme “Think Health, Think Pharmacist”, we are reminded of the vital role pharmacists play in safeguarding the health of our communities.
Pharmacists are more than dispensers of medicines—we are trusted healthcare professionals, educators, and advocates for the rational and safe use of medicines. In Ethiopia, where access to quality healthcare is both a challenge and a priority, pharmacists stand at the frontline, ensuring that the right medicine reaches the right patient at the right time, promoting antimicrobial stewardship to combat resistance, supporting maternal and child health through safe prescribing and medication use, and guiding patients with compassion, knowledge, and integrity.
As the Mekelle Branch of the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing pharmacy services, strengthening evidence-based healthcare, and working hand in hand with other professionals to build a healthier world.
Today, let us celebrate the dedication, expertise, and resilience of pharmacists everywhere. When we say “Think Health, Think Pharmacist”, we are not only recognizing our profession—we are affirming that pharmacists are essential partners in achieving universal health coverage and a stronger healthcare system for all.
Happy World Pharmacists Day!
