SPHMMC First-Year Medical Students Visit AHRI

First-year medical students from St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) visited the herbal botanical garden and research laboratories at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI).

During the visit, students explored Ethiopia’s rich medicinal plants, observed how herbal remedies are studied and developed into modern treatments, and learned from AHRI researchers about the drug discovery process and the role of traditional medicine in modern healthcare.

This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of the connection between herbal medicine and modern pharmacology while inspiring them to value research and innovation in their future medical careers.
The visit was initiated and coordinated by Dr. Mebratu Eyasu, Director of Pharmacy Education and Services at SPHMMC

Statement from Mr. Regasa Bayisa
Lead Executive officer, pharmaceuticals and medical devices division, Ministry of Health – Ethiopia
On the Occasion of World Pharmacists Day 2025
Theme: ““Think Health, Think Pharmacist”
In this World Pharmacists Day 2025, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all pharmacists in Ethiopia and around the globe for their unwavering dedication, professionalism, and service. Your tireless efforts to ensure the availability of safe, effective, and affordable pharmaceuticals remain indispensable to the health and wellbeing of our communities.
This year’s theme, “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” powerfully reminds us that pharmacists are not merely custodians of medicines, they are architects of improved health outcomes, champions of rational drug use, and essential contributors to resilient and responsive health systems.
As we commemorate this important day, I call upon all stakeholder government institutions, academic bodies, development partners, and professional associations, to renew their commitment to empower, capacitate, and support the pharmacy workforce. Let us recognize, elevate, and invest in the critical role pharmacists play in building healthier citizens and advancing our national health priorities.
Lastly, I wish Happy World Pharmacists Day to all who serve with knowledge, compassion, and purpose. Let this day inspire renewed dedication and professional excellence.
Think Health, Think Pharmacist.
Happy World Pharmacists Day 2025!
Message from the Executive Director
Mr. Kidu Hailu
Executive Director, Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association (EPA)
I would like to say congratulations to all pharmacists practicing in Ethiopia and beyond as they colorfully celebrate the 16 th World Pharmacists Day on the 25 th of September 2025 for their professional quality service provision accomplishments which definitely saved the lives of millions if not billions. Commemorating World Pharmacists Day was decided in 2009 by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and celebrating the day started after one year in 2010 on the 25 th of September, the day on which FIP was founded (1912). Celebration of the World Pharmacists Day aims at creating awareness about the role pharmacists are playing in the healthcare system. . This years’ World Pharmacists Day is being celebrated with a theme of “Think Health, Think Pharmacists Day”. The Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association (EPA) is commemorating the 16 th World Pharmacists Day by highlighting pharmacists’ contributions to improving health outcomes and strengthening health systems in Ethiopia, enhancing the awareness and understanding of the fundamentals of quality pharmacy care, with a focus on patient-centered and evidence-based services, showcasing the evolving role of pharmacists in areas such as mental health care and their impact on holistic health service delivery, creating a platform for knowledge exchange, discussion, and reflection among pharmacists, policymakers, academia, and health sector stakeholders and fostering collaboration and shared vision within the pharmacy profession through collective discussions on challenges, opportunities, and future directions. Finally, I would like to reiterate that we pharmacists must work in unison to uphold the honor and ethics of pharmacy profession and practice with passion for the holistic growth of the pharmaceutical sector in Ethiopia which I strongly believe will pay us back unparalleled dividends.
