Over 100 Patients Receive Life-Changing Eye Surgeries at SPHMMC
St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) has successfully carried out a major eye surgery campaign that provided life-changing treatment to 102 patients (109 eyes). The surgical campaign included:
82 DCR surgeries (4 bilateral)
15 lid surgeries (3 bilateral)
5 orbitotomy procedures
The initiative benefited both adults and children suffering from severe conditions such as advanced tumors, infections caused by tear duct blockages, and lid malformations.
The campaign was made possible through the generous support of Operation Ethiopia, an Israeli humanitarian organization committed to expanding access to eye care services in Ethiopia.
Volunteer ophthalmologists from Israel — Dr. Ran Stein and Dr. Shirin Hamed Azzam — worked in collaboration with SPHMMC doctors Dr. Asrat, Dr. Seblewongel, and Dr. Bethelehem. Their efforts were further supported by residents, nurses, and coordinators who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the program.
SPHMMC leadership extended deep appreciation to Operation Ethiopia and all the medical teams involved, emphasizing that these surgeries have had a transformative impact on patients who otherwise had limited access to such specialized care.

I am Solomon Ayele, a journalist with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA). I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to the entire medical team at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) for the exceptional care and treatment I received during my hospital stay.
For over a month, I was visiting the outpatient department at SPHMMC due to persistent and severe abdominal pain. After undergoing several tests, I was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. Before receiving this diagnosis, I had been experiencing a number of distressing symptoms: my pain worsened after meals—especially fatty ones—I often vomited during painful episodes, suffered from diarrhea, and had significant weight loss due to poor digestion. These issues deeply affected me both physically and mentally.
After consulting with many doctors, the hospital's multidisciplinary team (MDT) determined that surgery was necessary. On August 14th, I underwent a complex operation that lasted four hours. I then spent five days recovering in the hospital's third-floor ward, where I received outstanding care and support.
I would especially like to thank my surgeons — Dr. Endale Kechaw Hailu and Dr. Kirubel Abebe, both expert liver and bile duct surgeons — and most of all, Dr. Weletaw Chane, who served as the lead surgeon during my operation. My sincere gratitude also goes to the entire surgical team, the anesthetists, nurses, doctors, and all the hospital staff who played a role in my care and recovery.
Today, I am grateful to say that the pain I once suffered is completely gone. I am no longer sick, and I no longer live in discomfort. Before the surgery, I could barely sleep because of the pain. Now, I am well, pain-free, and able to live a normal life again.
Above all, I thank God for giving me the strength and grace to get through this difficult time.
St. Paul’s is truly fortunate to have such skilled and compassionate specialists. My deepest thanks to each member of the medical team, and to the entire St. Paul’s community. Words cannot fully express my gratitude.
Thank you all!

SPHMMC First-Year Medical Students Visit AHRI
First-year medical students from St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) visited the herbal botanical garden and research laboratories at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI).
During the visit, students explored Ethiopia’s rich medicinal plants, observed how herbal remedies are studied and developed into modern treatments, and learned from AHRI researchers about the drug discovery process and the role of traditional medicine in modern healthcare.
This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of the connection between herbal medicine and modern pharmacology while inspiring them to value research and innovation in their future medical careers.
The visit was initiated and coordinated by Dr. Mebratu Eyasu, Director of Pharmacy Education and Services at SPHMMC
