H.E. Girma Biru Visits SPHMMC, Reviews Upcoming Centers of Excellence

In a top-level visit that reaffirms the nation's dedication to improving specialized care, today H.E. Girma Biru, Economic Advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, made a visit to St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC).

Accompanying him were H.E. Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance; H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health; State Ministers Dr. Dereje Duguma, Seherela Abedella, and Frehiwot Abebe.

The visitors visited the soon-to-be-opened Centers of Excellence in Cardiac Care, Oncology, and Organ Transplantation—sneak peeks at the state-of-the-art facilities that promise to transform access to high-quality medical care in Ethiopia.

SPHMMC Provost Dr. Muluken Tesfaye and vice provosts and senior experts took the officials on a tour of the centers' progress and future promise. H.E. Girma Biru stressed the importance of completing construction and putting the facilities into operation, stressing their key role in providing services to Ethiopian citizens.

He also commended the college administration for its initiative to organize such pioneering projects.

In attendance during the visit as well were Vice Provosts Dr. Lemi Belay, Mr. Jemal Shifa, and Dr. Ewnet Gebrehanna.

H.E. Girma Biru commended SPHMMC's accomplishment and reaffirmed the government's strong resolve in enhancing sophisticated medical care across the nation.

SPHMMC, Professor Senayt Discuss Advancing Centers of Excellence

Professor Senayt Fisseha, Vice President for Global Programs at the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, held a high-level discussion with Minister of health and the leadership of St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) to strengthen collaboration in advancing the institution’s newly established Centers of Excellence.

The meeting was attended by Professor Senayt, H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health, along with State Ministers of Health HE Frehiwot Abebe and HE Saharela Abdulahi. Representing SPHMMC leadership, Dr. Muluken Tesfaye, Provost, participated together with Vice Provosts Dr. Lemi Belay, Dr. Jemal Shifa, and Dr. Ewnet Gebre Hana.

Discussions focused on the development of the new Cardiac Care, Oncology, Organ Transplant, and ENT Centers, with a shared vision of elevating them to international standards. The collaboration aims to transform these centers into leading hubs for advanced care and specialized training in Ethiopia, enabling citizens to access life-saving treatments without leaving the country.

For more than ten years, Professor Senayt has been a strong supporter of various departments within the college, earning recognition from SPHMMC for her substantial contributions. She reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation’s partnership with St. Paul’s, ensuring deeper and more sustainable cooperation in the years ahead

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

1. Master of Science in respiratory therapy
Application requirement
 BSC from an accredited institution in Nursing, Health officer, or Anesthesia.
 Undergraduate GPA of minimum 2.75
 Has been serving in a clinical environment for the last minimum of two years or has been working as an academician on the fields listed above.
 Present letter of sponsorship or evidence for self-sponsorship
 Two letters of recommendation from the clinical employer, undergraduate instructor or professional association
 Copy of Degree and transcript
 Scored pass mark (at least 70%) in the total admission evaluation
NB: Those who have experience in hospital ICUs, emergency units, anesthesia/OR, pulmonary and bronchoscopy units will have privilege; only documented official evidences are acceptable.

2. Master of Science in Medical Microbiology
Application requirement
 First degree in Medicine, Medical laboratory technology, Medical laboratory sciences, Biology, Veterinary medicine, Microbiology, Biomedical sciences
 Sponsorship from government hosting institute or self-sponsor applicants should enter a commitment to pay cost of the training.
o Self-sponsors students will pay 1,400 birr per credit hour and should cover research associated expenses.

Remarks: Master of Science in Medical Microbiology is a 2year regular program; first year course work, second year seminar and research work.

3. Masters of Science in Medical Radiologic Technology
 BSC in MRT plus appropriate clinical experience in diagnostic imaging
 Candidates will not, under normal circumstances, be accepted with less than two years of general post-qualification experience.
 Two recommendation letters from immediate supervisor

Specific requirements for each program

1. MSC in Critical Care Nursing:
- Hold a Bachelors’ degree in comprehensive Nursing, Specialty (post basic nursing) or related fields with nursing background from an accredited higher education institutions
- Have a minimum of 1 years’ experience with BSC degree in clinical or academic activities

2. MSC in Cardiovascular Nursing:
- Hold first degree in any nursing fields, and have an experience in clinical Working areas including (Adult ICU, OR, Cardiac center) or Academic for at least one yearwith written evidence

3. MSC in Neonatal Nursing:
- Hold first degree in neonatal nursing, midwifery, pediatric nursing or comprehensive nursing, for at least one year of experience in NICU with written evidence

4. MSC in Clinical Oncology Nursing:
- Hold BSC in nursing (comprehensive BSC nursing, post basic oncology nursing, post basic emergency and critical care nursing, pediatrics and or child health nursing, other nursing specialties with at least one-year work experience in hospice centers, cancer palliative care areas and other governmental or non-governmental health institutions providing oncology care services)
- Have at least one year of work experience in clinical setting or higher education institutions.

5. MSC in Paramedics Science:
- Should have BSc degree in Nursing /Midwifery/Anaesthesia/Health officer/ or related health fields from a higher education institutions.
- Have a minimum of one-year experience with BSC degree in clinical or academic activities with written evidence.
- Experience in emergency and ICU setup will have an advantage.

6. MSC in Cardiothoracic Nursing:
- BSC in Nursing and at least six months experience in Operating theatre/academic with written evidence.
