Catholics, Protestants, and the secular era have all had their inquisitions, their prosecution of heresy by different names and through different means but all have something they consider Holy and sacred. The Eucharist and authority of the church, sola scriptura, democracy, sodomites and blacks.

Different eras but the religious core of man never changes. Man must choose what is Holy for him and what is sacred. He will choose either God and his people or something much less dignifying.

"Ask of the sinner how many impure thoughts he has consented to: he will tell you he cannot remember. But, brother, if you cannot tell the number, God can; and you know that a single willful immodest thought is enough to send you to Hell... From thoughts and words you proceed to acts, and to those innumerable impurities which those wretches roll and wallow in like swine, without ever being satisfied, for this vice is never satisfied."

No painting is greater than the artist who painted it, not is any sculpture grander than the hands that crafted it. No created thing is above that which created it and this is most true about the relationship between The Creator and creation itself.

β€œIf any man say, I love God, and hateth his brother; he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother, whom he seeth, how can he love God, whom he seeth not?”

If a man neglects his children he cannot have the love of God in him. If a man neglects his people, ignores the dangers that face them in hopes of saving himself or avoiding suffering the love of God cannot be in him.

Today we celebrate the birth of our Lord and remember that the love and sacrifice which was made for us we owe to each other and our people.

Listening to this book about the Donner party. It has been one of the more interesting historical incidents I have read about. One of the survivors (Virginia Reed) subsequently converted to Catholicism after seeing how much strength the faith gave the Breen family during their suffering.

I went to go read the archived diary of Patrick Breen the Catholic Irish Immigrant and one entry stood out.

β€œAll out of meat all we have our hides nearly eaten up but with Gods help Spring will soon smile upon us February 10, 1847

The patient bearing of suffering can be a tool to inspire faith in others. That is what we should hope for, not to avoid suffering but to bear it well for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.
