SQUATTERS #RESOURCES

[W]e must insist on the struggle for the satisfaction of immediate needs and desires. In other words, the seizing of buildings for shelter, the organized looting of sustenance for our bodies and minds, and the cultivation of new ways of living and providing for one another so as to sustain our attack against the structures that impoverish our lives. At this moment, in relation to the horizon of the gradual generalization of building occupations, we must pose a question: what would it mean to begin a broader project of expropriation?

Rent Abolition Revisited: The Indentured Tenant

The mythos of capitalism in America is constructed on the basis of โ€œeconomic freedomโ€. One is free to own property; one is free to open a business; one is free to buy luxuries. These freedoms seem reasonable and desirable โ€” principles upon which to build a โ€œfreeโ€ society. However, if we were to say that one is free to work for a wage, one is free to pay rent, and one is free to be in debt, suddenly the principle of โ€œeconomic freedomโ€ seems less desirable [...] โ€œFreedomโ€, in our society, is a privilege dependent upon class [...] [Y]ou are either extorted by the landlord, or indebted to the banker [...] With this set of arrangements our โ€œeconomic freedomโ€ boils down to the freedom to be extorted by housing debt, or the freedom to be homeless. When the veil of the American Dream is lifted from the capitalist machine, it becomes obvious that โ€œfreedomโ€ for the American proletariat means freedom to obey, or freedom to die.
