Iran is rapidly constructing a suspected nuclear facility hidden deep inside a granite mountain near Natanz — known as “Pickaxe Mountain” — with satellite imagery showing significant construction progress during 2026.
The facility is believed to be intended to protect centrifuges or uranium-enrichment processes, placing them beyond the reach of advanced U.S. bunker-busting bombs.
Trump has threatened to strike the facility — “We may hit Pickaxe Mountain very soon” — but even the Pentagon’s largest non-nuclear bomb may not be capable of penetrating deeply enough to destroy it.
The United States appears to already be working on a solution: one day before the war began, a Pentagon agency responsible for countering weapons of mass destruction signed an emergency contract to repair an underground test facility carved into granite at White Sands — a site linked to simulations of strikes against Iran’s deepest underground bunkers.
A “next-generation penetrator” bomb is also in the early stages of development.
Analysts from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) assess that the Pickaxe Mountain facility is not yet operational, but construction appears to be transitioning from excavation and tunneling to internal construction and reinforcement.

A Pentagon memo states the U.S. awarded an emergency $1.2 million dollar contract to prepare weapons tests for a ‘classified capability’ at a subterranean test range at White Sands National Park, New Mexico

Three sources told that the test plans were linked to Iran and the need to develop a way to target its deepest-buried underground facilities, specifically the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site.

The offensive saw PLC-aligned and Tariq Saleh’s National Resistance forces collapse or withdraw across the Hays axis, abandoning Hays, Al-Khawkhah, Al-Haymah port, Al-Wazi’iyah, Mawza, Yakhtul, Jabal al-Nar, the Khalid ibn al-Walid camp and numerous surrounding positions, before Houthi forces advanced on Mocha from the north and east and subsequently reached the city and coastline.

Saudi and Yemeni aircraft launched intensive strikes, including around Jabal al-Nar, in an attempt to slow the advance, while the Houthis simultaneously fired ballistic missiles at Mocha and targets inside Saudi Arabia.

Houthi leader Mahdi al-Mashat also announced an amnesty for opposing fighters who lay down their weapons as government-aligned forces retreated southward.

The capture of Mocha removes the principal anti-Houthi military and logistical hub on this section of the Red Sea coast and places Ansarullah only 60–75 km north of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, bringing its ground forces significantly closer to one of the world’s most critical shipping chokepoints.
