Violence broke out in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, after the Mexican Army killed Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” In apparent retaliation, cartel members set buses and several buildings on fire, triggering chaos in parts of the city as security forces moved to contain the unrest.

In response, the Mexican CJNG cartel attacked Guadalajara International Airport and executed National Guard soldiers.
The cartel set up roadblocks and executed civilians who approached the scene.

Heavy gunfire and scenes of panic were reported near the airports in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, with people seen fleeing the area and fires burning nearby.

U.S. authorities have urged American citizens in parts of Mexico to remain indoors and shelter in place. The advisory covers areas of Jalisco, as well as regions in Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León.

According to U.S. officials speaking to the media, the United States was involved in supporting today’s Mexican-led operation.
