על פי המכון למדע וביטחון בינלאומי, איראן קברה מחדש את הכניסה האמצעית בעפר והוסיפה שכבה לכניסה הדרומית ביותר על מנת להגן על האורניום מפני תקיפות אוויריות עתידיות אפשריות. הפתחים נפתחו זמנית בחודשים האחרונים כדי לאפשר למהנדסים לחזק את המנהרות באמצעות חומרי בטון בעלי ביצועים גבוהים במיוחד (UHPC).

המכון אומר כי גם צפה במאמצי הבנייה האחרונים בבניין עילי ששימש בעבר לייצור צנטריפוגות, מה שמעלה חששות שאיראן מנסה לחדש את ההעשרה, על מנת להשיג אורניום ברמת נשק (טוהר של 90%).

המנהרות התת-קרקעיות באספהאן ממוקמות בעומק של יותר מ-100 מטרים ולא היו מטרות במהלך מלחמת ישראל-איראן ביוני 2025. ההערכה היא שמנהרות אלו, שככל הנראה מכילות את מאגר האורניום של איראן, עמוקות ומחוזקות מדי מכדי להיפגע אפילו על ידי פצצות הבונקרים הגדולות ביותר של אמריקה, ה-GBU-57 'Massive Ordnance Penentrator' (MOP).

בנוסף למאמצי השיקום והחיזוק של איראן באספהאן, נמשכת גם בנייה באתר הגרעין התת-קרקעי החדש בשם Pickaxe Mountain. לא הרבה ידוע על קומפלקס זה, אך ההערכה היא שהוא גדול ועמוק משמעותית מפורדו, וייתכן שהוא כבר מכיל מספר צנטריפוגות.

Recent satellite imagery from the Esfahan nuclear site in Iran shows new activity at the tunnel entrances which are believed to hold the 408 kilograms of highly-enriched uranium.

According to the Institute of Science and International Security, Iran has re-buried the middle entrance with soil and is adding more fresh soil to the southernmost entrance in order to protect the uranium from potential future airstrikes. The entrances were temporarily opened in recent months to allow engineers to reinforce the tunnels with Ultra-High Performance Conceete (UHPC).

The Institute says it has also observed recent construction efforts at an above ground building which was previously involved in centrifuge manufacturing, raising concerns that Iran is trying to resume enrichment, in order to obtain uranium of weapons-grade level (90% purity).

The underground tunnels at Esfahan are located more than 100 meters deep and were not targeted during thr Israel - Iran war in June 2025. It is believed that these tunnels, which presumably hold Iran's uranium stockpile, are too deep and reinforced to be damaged even by America's largest bunker busters, the GBU-57 'Massive Ordnance Penentrator' (MOP).

Alongside Iran's reconstruction and reinforcement efforts at Esfahan, construction is also ongoing at the new underground nuclear site called Pickaxe Mountain. Not much is known about this complex, but it is thought to be substantially larger and deeper than Fordow, and it potentially already holds several centrifuges.

Black (DDG-119) - a modern Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer - considered one of the most powerful and versatile ships (capable of intercepting drones and missiles, capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles and anti-submarine missiles) in the US Navy, arrived in the Middle East in recent days and joined the large naval force that the US maintains in the region.
