The bodies of israeli hostages Amiram Cooper, 85, and Sahar Baruch, 25, were returned to Israel by Hamas this afternoon.

Cooper was kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023, and was killed in captivity, the IDF confirmed on June 2024.

Baruch was kidnapped in Kibbutz Be'eri and was killed during a failed IDF hostage rescue mission in December 2023.

Hamas is still holding the dead bodies of 9 Israeli and 2 foreign hostages.
IDF:

Following the completion of the identification process by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, in cooperation with the Israel Police and the Military Rabbinate, IDF representatives informed the families of Amiram Cooper and Sahar Baruch that they have been returned for burial.

According to the information and intelligence available to the IDF, Amiram Cooper was abducted alive by Hamas from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz. It is estimated that he was murdered in captivity in February 2024. Amiram was 84 years old at the time of his death. He leaves behind a wife, four children, and 11 grandchildren.
His wife, Nurit Cooper, was also abducted and later released from Hamas captivity in October 2023.
Final conclusions will be made upon completion of the examination of the circumstances of death at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine.

According to the information and intelligence available to the IDF, Sahar Baruch was abducted alive by Hamas from his home in Kibbutz Be'eri. It is estimated that he was murdered in captivity on December 8th, 2023. Sahar was 25 years old at the time of his death. He leaves behind parents and two brothers. His brother, Edan Baruch, and his grandmother, Geula Bachar, were murdered in the attack on the Kibbutz.
Final conclusions will be made upon completion of the examination of the circumstances of death at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine.

The IDF expresses deep condolences to the families, continues to make every effort to return all the deceased hostages, and is prepared for the continued implementation of the agreement.

Hamas is required to fulfill its part of the agreement and make the necessary efforts to return all the hostages to their families and to a dignified burial

בכותב בשם קרן המורשת היהודית בסוריה (JHS), חמרה טוען כי חוק קיסר, שהוטל במקור כדי להעניש את ממשלת אסד, פוגע כעת במורשת היהודית שנותרה בסוריה ומונע מיהודי סורים עקורים לחזור ולשקם את בתי הכנסת, בתי הקברות ורכושם הקהילתי.

"אי ביטול מלא של חוק קיסר יהיה הרסני לקהילה היהודית בסוריה", כתב חמרה, והזהיר כי המשך הסנקציות מסכן "קריסה מוחלטת של הכלכלה והחברה של סוריה", יפתח מרחב לקבוצות קיצוניות ויהפוך את השיקום לבלתי אפשרי.

Rabbi Yosef Hamra, spiritual leader of the Syrian Jewish community, has sent a letter to the U.S. Congress urging a full repeal of the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act — the sweeping sanctions law that continues to cripple Syria’s reconstruction and energy sectors.

Writing on behalf of the Jewish Heritage in Syria Foundation (JHS), Hamra argues that the Caesar Act, originally imposed to punish the Assad government, now harms Syria’s remaining Jewish heritage and prevents displaced Syrian Jews from returning to restore their synagogues, cemeteries, and communal properties.

“Failing to fully repeal the Caesar Act would be devastating to the Jewish community in Syria,” Hamra wrote, warning that continued sanctions risk “a complete collapse of Syria’s economy and society,” opening space for extremist groups and making reconstruction impossible.

The letter recalls that the Jobar Synagogue in Damascus, one of the oldest in the world, was destroyed during the war despite international pleas to preserve it. JHS says it has managed to protect the tomb of Rabbi Chaim Vital (1542–1620) but warns that further preservation efforts cannot continue under the current sanctions regime.

Hamra concludes by calling on U.S. lawmakers to lift sanctions “for the return of our community to our homeland,” framing the repeal as both a humanitarian and cultural necessity.
