St. Valentine was a 3rd-century Roman priest who defied Emperor Claudius II’s ban on marriage for young soldiers by secretly officiating weddings. Arrested and imprisoned for this defiance and for aiding persecuted Christians, he was executed on February 14, 269 AD. Legend adds he fell in love with his jailer's daughter, signing a farewell note "from your Valentine". 
Key Elements of the Legend:
The Secret Marriages: Emperor Claudius II ("the Cruel") believed single men made better soldiers and outlawed marriage. Valentine continued to marry young lovers in secret.
Imprisonment and Romance: While imprisoned, it is said Valentine befriended the jailer's daughter, or in some versions, the jailer's blind daughter.
The First "Valentine": Before his execution on February 14, he reportedly wrote a note to the girl, signing it "from your Valentine," a phrase still used today.
Miracle: Legend claims he cured his jailer's blind daughter of her blindness.
