The conquest of Constantinople by the Turks on May 29, 1453, is more than just a city fall. The conquest was a turning point in Turkish and Islamic history as well as world history.
There were two world powers at the time of the Islamic uprising: the Persian Empire that ruled Iran and Iraq, and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire that ruled Asia Minor, Syria, Egypt, and the Balkans. The Persian Empire had already been overthrown by Muslims in the time of Umar bin Khattab, the second Rashidun caliph, and Syria and Egypt were the first two Byzantine regions conquered by the Muslims.
Known as βCostantiniyya" by the Arabs, Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, became a virtuous center for Islam. The famous hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (the tradition of prophecy) symbolize this purpose:
"Verily you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will he be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!" and "The first army that goes on an expedition to Constantinople will be forgiven."
The conquest of Constantinople allowed for the capture of the 7th Sultan, Mehmed II. A 21-year-old wise ruler set up a siege system day and night. He developed the fastest-growing cooling cannon and ordered to build a fort on the European side of the Bosporus in a short time. He gathered intelligence around the city.
Istanbul not only lives in a strategically important area but also has a beautiful landscape. As French Governor Napoleon put it, "If the world were a single state, Istanbul would be its capital."
Preparations for the defeat of Istanbul began a year earlier. The large canons that were needed for the siege were formed. In 1452, Rumeli Castle on the European side was built to control the Bosphorus. A large fleet of 16 ships was built. The number of soldiers doubled. The Byzantine routes were taken under control. An agreement was reached with Genoese to keep Galata impartial during the war. In April 1453, the first troops on the Ottoman border were seen in front of Constantinople.
