Most people see depression and mental illness as a weakness and failure...I used to be one of those people..I used to think that sharing my problems with people made me look weak...I was afraid of the judgement that followed...I wanted to please everyone my friends my classmates my family....even though I had a bad day and I was sad or worried I smiled...and pretended everything was ok....a couple of months ago.... I was sexually assaulted by the person I trusted...that incident really shook me ..but I pretended nothing happened....and continued like before. ...In reality I was traumatized with what happened that I couldn't focus on anything...I couldn't sleep, study..... I couldn't concentrate in class....getting out of bed became really hard....I wanted to feel something so I used food to cope...I ate sweets...biscuits...chips... anything I could get my hands on...when that didn't work I turned to alcohol and smoking....I desperately wanted to feel happy again...to be the person I was before all this happened but I couldn't...The thought of becoming a failure and disappointing my parents after all their sacrifice was an added burden...I hated myself..I couldn't talk and pretend with my friends anymore..I thought no one would understand.I was on the verge of quitting med school. When a friend seeing the struggle I was going through convinced me to seek help.I was diagnosed with Major depressive disorder and PTSD.I was put on antidepressants and psychotherapy.I can tell you now looking back that it wasn't easy getting help nor was admitting that I have a mental illness.I was so afraid and concerned what people would say about me that I lost focus of me.I let myself go to the point where my mental health suffered.
As med students we live in a grueling community where our education is everything and that admitting you have a mental illness is seen as a weakness.
I can tell you now that this is totally wrong. Based on a survey we did with AAU we have found that 80% of med students in our country (yes u read that right) suffer from some form of mental illness.I am telling u this because I see lots of med students with great potential give up on their dreams of becoming a doctor not because they are weak but because they had no one to talk their problems with.I can assure you now, You are not alone and You are not weak for asking to get help...you are strong...just the fact that u made it till this point in your life makes u strong...
If you have any problem, anything that is affecting you, you can get the help you deserve by talking to a friend,a support group or a mental health specialist that we have formed under EMSA Jimma confidentially by just filling your needs on the new bot we have created which will be released in the coming weeks.....#mentalhealthincampus

Apollo was recognized as being the god of poetry, music and dance, healing and diseases, truth and prophecy in the Greeks and Roman mythology.

The Apollo magazine is given the name because it’s intended to show out the extraordinary side of med students. It’s not only about healing and helping the sick we should be dealing with throughout our lives…we’ve already sacrificed our youth to that, life something more than that! There is so much going on in the world we’re missing out even though we have a lot to give.
But
here is the time to break that box you are in,the time where you can actually discover the potential you have and never realized and if you already had, well take the chance to see your contribution get recognition.
