"There is no Frigate like a book," Emily Dickinson once beautifully  wrote. These words hold a special  meaning as we launch our new Bookclub, geared specifically towards bringing students to explore the far-reaching depth of books and literature.

Our bookclub aims to bring like-minded individuals together to share their love for reading and discussing books. Besides, whether you're a seasoned bookworm or just starting to explore the world of BOOKS, there is a place for you in our Bookclub.

We'll select books each time and explore the themes, characters and ideas presented in the book along the way. We will also share book recommendations as we aspire to expand each other's literary horizons.

So, if you want to transport yourselves into a new world of books and open your minds to new perspectives, we invite you to join our Bookclub and take yourselves on a literary adventure!

Did you know that May is world wide Mental Health Awareness Month?

🟢One of the biggest obstacles faced by individuals with mental health issues is the stigma attached to their conditions.

🟢Educating ourselves on the array of issues that exist within the realm of our mental health is the first step we can take to break the stigma.

🟢 As the first installment of our monthly virtual awareness creation campaign, we will be discussing Anxiety, Burnout , sleep and its effects on our mental health.

What is Generalized Anxiety disorder (GAD)?

🟢 It is a mental disorder characterised by distressing, persistent and uncontrollable worry which is disproportionate to the actual situation or event.

🟢 According to WHO, 264 million individuals have an Anxiety disorder.

🟢 About a 5th of all people will experience a diagnosable Anxiety disorder at some point in their lives.

When is it diagnosable?

🟢 GAD is clinically diagnosable when the symptoms last for at least 6 months.
What are panic attacks?

🟢 Sudden episodes of intense dread or fear that comes without warning.

🟢 While the symptoms of GAD can be hard to pin down, panic attacks are brief, well defined and sometimes severe bouts of elevated anxiety with
no obvious trigger.

When can it happen?

🟢 it can happen any time- when you are  in the middle of a class, in the taxi, and even when you are fast asleep.

Duration?

🟢 A panic attack begins suddenly and most often peaks within 10 to 20 minutes.

What can cause it?

🟢 While the cause of a panic disorder is not exactly known, certain factors are believed to play a role.

🟩 Genetics
🟩 persistent stress
🟩 Psychological trauma from the past.
🟩 Usually, a common trigger for panic attack is simply the fear of having another panic attack.
How do we break out of the anxiety cycle?

1. Acknowledge the anxiety

🟢 The first step in breaking the anxiety cycle is to recognize and acknowledge that you are feeling anxious. This can help you become more aware of your emotions and make it easier to address them.

2. Identifying triggers

🟢 Determining and listing down the situations, thoughts and events that cause your anxiety will help you manage your anxiety more effectively.

3. Challenge negative thoughts

🟢 when you notice anxious thoughts, challenge them by asking yourself if they are rational or based on facts. They usually aren't, so try and replace them with more realistic and positive alternatives.

4. Develop healthy coping mechanisms

🟢Incorporate relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises into your daily routine.

5. Monitor your progress

🟢 Regularly assess your anxiety levels and the effectiveness of your coping strategies. This will help you identify any areas that may need improvement and make adjustments as needed.

6. Be patient

🟢 Breaking the anxiety cycle takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and remember that progress may be slow, but it is still progress.

1600 BC (Ancient Egypt): Doctors discovered that the heart pumps🩸around the body.
For thousands of years, the heart got the credit for almost everything that happened in the body. The Ancient Egyptians noticed there were tubes coming off the heart going in all sorts of different directions, so they decided that it was responsible for moving around blood (yep!), spit (umm, nope), poo (what were they thinking?), the soul (is that even a thing?) and ghosts 👻 (umm, guys...).

Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction

we have launched our PAL+ OES (peer assisted learning + Oral Exam Simulation) project; which pairs senior students with newer medical students to provide guidance and support them in their medical journey.The program is looking for  students from each batch who would like to volunteer as mentors and, as part of the package, will receive an orientation, a certificate of appreciation upon completion of the project, as well as leadership and communication training, and other benefits.

SCOME's Demystifying medical school project has successfully held its C1 orientation today!

We would like to thank our guest speakers from New and Old C2 for sharing their experiences of the clinical year. They have given us many valuable pointers and advices on how to navigate the changes and bumps we will face as we transition into a new learning setup.
