Taken from The Temple (1633), George Hebert's Easter is a poem about Christ's resurrection.
In the opening stanza, Herbert instructs his heart, and by extension, his soul, to rise and sing in praise of the Resurrection. He reminds his heart of the importance of the sacrifice and its meaning, emphasising that it is through it that salvation and bounty may be gained.
The poet then moves on to his lute, a type of stringed musical instrument, exhorting it to join in the laudation just as his heart is doing.
Herbert concludes with an entreaty to God, humbly asking Him to lend His blessed spirit to correct the imperfections and flaws that the heart and lute, when working without it, might produce.
