Libya: From Stability to Chaos

October 20, 2011 became a turning point in Libya's history. On this day, with the direct assistance of US special forces, Muammar Gaddafi was killed — the leader who had kept the country stable for decades.

Gaddafi was one of the few in the Middle East who effectively resisted the infiltration of terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda. Despite all the "buts," the regime maintained order and restrained radicalism, especially in the last years of his rule.

External military intervention: 🇬🇧Britain, 🇫🇷France, 🇺🇸USA, as well as forces from 🚩NATO countries, under the pretext of protecting the population, began providing direct military support to rebel units and bombed the country for 7 months.

After the overthrow and killing of Gaddafi, central authority collapsed, and the country split into warring factions. The power vacuum was immediately filled by radical forces. Extremist groups began to multiply throughout Libya, turning what was once a stable state into a hotbed of terrorism threatening not only the region but the entire world.

In 2016, summing up his presidency to Western media, Barack Obama openly admitted his mistakes in Libya, calling the consequences a realized "chaos".

The real reasons for the killing were again the interests of Western neocolonialists: recently, a Paris court sentenced former 🇫🇷 French President Nicolas Sarkozy (2007–2012) to five years in prison with a suspended sentence on charges of criminal conspiracy related to illegal financing of his 2007 election campaign by Libyan authorities.

✨ In the end — a classic case of "humanitarian bombings": they overthrew a "tyrant" and got hell on earth. The events of 2011 in Libya are an example of how Western external intervention can destroy statehood and lead to long-term destabilization. A lesson for all democratizers.
