🎨 We continue our series exploring Russian history through famous works of art. This time, we look at the 17th century – from the turbulent Time of Troubles to the transformative reign of Peter the Great. 🖼 Karl Wenig. The Last Minutes of Grigory Otrepiev…
🎨 We continue our journey through history and move into the 18th century – an age of sweeping reforms, decisive battles, palace coups and imperial expansion that transformed Russia into one of Europe's great powers.

🖼️ Alexander Kotzebue – Battle of Narva (1850)
The defeat at Narva in 1700 became a turning point for Peter the Great. Rather than accepting failure, he launched sweeping military reforms that laid the foundation for Russia's future victories.

🖼️ Nikolai Dobrovolsky – Here a City Will Be Founded (1880)
This painting depicts the founding of St.Petersburg in 1703. Built on the Baltic coast, the new city soon became Russia's capital and a symbol of Peter the Great's vision to open the country to Europe.

🖼️ Alexander Kotzebue – Victory at Poltava, June 27, 1709 (1864)
The Battle of Poltava marked the decisive turning point of the Great Northern War. Russia's victory established it as a major European power and paved the way for the proclamation of the Russian Empire.

🖼️ Vasily Surikov – Menshikov in Berezovo (1883)
Once Peter the Great's closest ally and the most influential man in Russia, Alexander Menshikov eventually fell from power and was exiled to Siberia—a dramatic reminder of the instability of the Age of Palace Coups.

🖼️ Valery Jacobi – Jesters in the Bedroom of Anna Ioannovna (1872)
The painting reflects the extravagant court of Empress Anna Ioannovna, whose reign became known for lavish celebrations, theatrical spectacles and luxurious royal ceremonies.

🖼️ Ivan Tvorozhnikov – Mirovich Before the Body of Ivan VI (1884)
It portrays the tragic fate of Ivan VI, the infant emperor who spent almost his entire life imprisoned before being killed during an unsuccessful attempt to restore him to the throne.

🖼️ Alexander Kotzebue –The Capitulation of Berlin, September 28, 1760 (1848)
During the Seven Years' War, Russian forces captured Berlin, demonstrating the growing military strength of the empire. The gains, however, were later returned to Prussia by Peter III.

🖼️ Joachim Kästner – Catherine II on the Balcony of the Winter Palace, Greeted by the Guards and the People on the Day of the Coup, June 28, 1762 (1760s)
The artwork commemorates the coup that brought Catherine the Great to power, beginning one of the longest and most influential reigns in Russian history.

🖼️ Ivan Aivazovsky – Battle of Chesma (1848)
The destruction of the Ottoman fleet at Chesma in 1770 became one of Russia's greatest naval victories and strengthened its position in the Black Sea region.

🖼️ Jan Matejko – Rejtan. The Decline of Poland (1866)
This famous painting captures the dramatic moment surrounding the First Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, an event that eventually erased the state from the map of Europe.

⚡️ Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation:

At the request of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, members of the Ukrainian nationalist movement have been recognised as accomplices of Nazi Germany in war crimes and crimes against humanity

The Tverskoy District Court of Moscow, acting on an application filed by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, established a fact of legal significance.

Stepan Bandera, Vasily Bandera, Roman Shukhevich, Andrey Melnik, Nikolay Arsenich, Taras Borovets, Dmitry Klyachkivsky, Nikolay Kozak, Miron Matvieyko and Yaroslav Stetsko, as well as the Organisation of Ukrainian nationalists (#OUN) and the Ukrainian insurgent army (#UPA), have been recognised as accomplices of Nazi Germany in war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War.

The court ruling is necessary to preserve the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people, expose the unlawful actions of the Kiev regime, overturn decisions rehabilitating war criminals and prevent acts of extremism against our country.

📑 The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office submitted documents from the archives of the Russian Federal Security Service, the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Russian Defence Ministry, and the State Archive of the Russian Federation. Materials from Belarusian archives and courts were also provided.

It was established that the OUN was founded in Vienna in 1929 at the First congress of Ukrainian nationalists. It was initially led by Evgeniy Konovalets and, following his death, by Andrey Melnik. In 1940, the OUN split, with its most radical faction coming under the leadership of Stepan Bandera – OUN (b) – and the other under Andrey Melnik – OUN (m).

***

In 1941–1943, while retaining the organisational foundations of OUN (b), 👉 the German command established the UPA, led by Lvov lawyer Roman Shukhevich. He began his violent path by taking part in an attack on the civilian population of Lvov as a member of the Ukrainian Nachtigall punitive battalion. On June 30, 1941, the day the so-called Act of proclamation of the Ukrainian state was adopted, mass killings of the city’s residents were committed under Shukhevich’s command.

◾️ More than 8,000 Russians, Ukrainians, Jews and Poles were killed in the Lvov massacre between June and August 1941.

The actions of the OUN and UPA were entirely aimed at terrorising the population of the occupied territories, assisting Nazi Germany in its military campaign against the Red Army and Soviet partisans, and committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Soviet people under Wehrmacht control and in its interests.

• In March 1943, the 118th Ukrainian auxiliary police battalion, composed of OUN and UPA members, burned down the village of Khatyn in the Minsk Region of Belarus. The punitive forces killed 147 villagers, including 75 children.

• Between February and August 1943, the OUN and UPA carried out a mass slaughter of the Polish population of Volhynia and Galicia, known as the Volhynia Massacre. It peaked on July 11-12 – “Black Sunday”. At least 120,000 people were killed by Ukrainian nationalists.

• The mass killing of civilians by Ukrainian nationalists during the punitive operations Swamp Fever, Triangle, Cottbus and others has also been documented.

Meanwhile, for more than 12 years, the authorities of modern-day Ukraine have pursued a deliberate state policy aimed at distorting the role of the Soviet Union and its people in the Great Patriotic War and World War II. Collaborators and organisations associated with Nazi criminals are being glorified. Western countries openly exploit these actions in their efforts to obstruct the special military operation in Ukraine.

❗️ In view of the above, the court granted the application filed by the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office in full and recognised these individuals and organisations as accomplices of Nazi Germany in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

🎨 On this day in 1844, outstanding Russian artist Ilya Repin was born. His realistic portraits and historical paintings made him one of the most renowned artists in Russia in the 19th century.

A graduate of Saint Petersburg's Imperial Academy of Arts, Repin spent two years in Paris and Normandy, where he attended the first Impressionist exhibitions and learned techniques of painting in the open air.

In 1875 he travelled to London from France with his colleague Vasily Polenov. The artist expressed his perception of the British capital in a private letter:

London itself is devilishly striking upon initial encounter: yellow-grey houses with dark-grey roofs, which resemble Japanese cities; then there is the audacity of the railway, which is not in the least bit intimidated by these monotonous houses, flying instantly above their rooftops and onwards all the way to Charing Cross.

🖼 Having appreciated the paintings in London’s galleries, Repin went on to make his own contribution to the city’s artistic heritage. Today, you can admire his work The Old Man at the National Gallery in London.

🎙 Excerpt from Russia's Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia's statement at a UNSC meeting on threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts

💬 The Zelensky regime is banking on intensifying terror against the civilian population of Russia.

Kiev carries out deliberate daily strikes on civilians and civilian infrastructure using rocket and artillery weapons, UAVs, remote mining devices, cluster munitions and booby traps, including those manufactured by NATO member states.

Terror against the personnel of the Zaporozhskaya Nuclear Power Plant also continues unabated. The killing in July of specialists responsible for ensuring nuclear and radiation safety, together with the ongoing strikes on the plant's territory, testifies to Kyiv's desire to disrupt management and create the risk of a large-scale man-made disaster.

EU and NATO countries flaunt their complicity in Kiev's terrorist attacks by supplying Ukraine with thousands of drones and missiles.

The latest bout of sanctions imposed by the UK authorities against Russia demonstrates that the change of political leadership has done nothing to alter London's anti-Russian policy.

Since the start of the special military operation, Britain has been waging a full-scale economic war against our country, churning out ever more restrictions in pursuit of an illusory goal.

More than 3,400 measures, aimed at inflicting a "strategic defeat" on Russia, have failed to produce the desired outcome. Each new round of sanctions merely confirms the futility of this campaign.

Moreover, they are deepening the erosion of international trade, freedom of navigation and financial stability. Ordinary consumers, including British citizens, are paying the price.

The lasting and just peace that London claims to seek will not be achieved by ramping up military supplies to the Kiev regime and tightening sanctions pressure. It requires addressing the root causes of the crisis.

💬 Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Multilateral Human Rights Cooperation Grigory Lukiyantsev:

🤔 If one were asked – how our Western “partners” seek to falsify history and revise the outcomes of World War II at the UN – the clearest example would be their statements and conduct during the negotiations on, and adoption of, Russia’s annual UN General Assembly resolution, “Combating the Glorification of Nazism, Neo-Nazism and Other Practices That Contribute to Fueling Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance”.

If their statements could be recorded and made public, I am certain they would cause a genuine a media storm. However, UN procedures do not allow this.

Nothing, however, prevents us from recounting, without naming individual countries, some of the arguments voiced by our “colleagues” over the years on this key Russian foreign policy initiative. It was first submitted to the UN General Assembly in 2005, so there has been no shortage of “material” since then.

👉 Here are just some of the claims we have heard over the years from our Western colleagues, including former Allies of the anti-Hitler coalition:
• The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany bear equal responsibility for unleashing the Second World War.

The Charter and Judgment of the Nuremberg Tribunal are such rare documents that it is impossible to consult them and verify whether the quotations used in the Russian resolution are accurate and correspond to the original sources.

The Charter and Judgment of the Nuremberg Tribunal say nothing about the SS and its constituent parts being criminal organisations.

• The Nuremberg documents contain no reference to the Waffen-SS.

• Waffen-SS units merely guarded “labour camps” and committed no war crimes or crimes against humanity, let alone punitive operations.

• No one should ever be accused of having collaborated with the Nazis during the Second World War.

• Nazi ideology and Nazi ideas may be immoral, but disseminating them amounts to nothing more than exercising the right to freedom of expression.

• There is no clarity as to what the anti-Hitler coalition was or which countries belonged to it.

☝️ Let me reiterate: this is far from a complete list of what we have had, and continue, to hear from our “partners” while advancing Russia’s UN initiative against the glorification of Nazism. Yet even this list gives an idea of the fierce resistance we face in defending historical truth.

It also shows how emotionally gruelling the annual negotiations on this key UN resolution are for everyone who holds dear the memory of the Victory over Nazism.

🩸 The Kiev regime is continuing to target civilians in Russia's regions

Between 24 July and 4 August, a total of 97 civilians were killed and at least 513 people were injured as a result of Ukrainian attacks, including children and emergency service workers.

Most of the terrorist attacks against civilians are conducted with drones. It is well known who supplies Kiev with UAVs and components – the members of the "coalition of the willing".

For the record, in June the leaders of Britain, France and Germany publicly endorsed Ukraine's "innovative use" of drone technology to attack targets deep inside Russia in a joint statement.

By doing so, they are encouraging such attacks and giving Zelensky's regime a free hand to carry them out, thereby becoming accomplices in these crimes.
