🎨 On this day in 1848, prominent Russian painter Viktor Vasnetsov was born.

One of the defining figures of Russian art in the late 19th century, he became renowned for bringing Slavic folklore, medieval legends and epic heroes to life in works such as Bogatyrs and Ivan Tsarevich Riding the Grey Wolf.

His richly imagined style helped shape how generations envisioned fairy tales and ancient myths, influencing theatre, book illustration and fantasy art well beyond his homeland.

🏛 May 18 marks International Museum Day.

Home to around 2,700 state museums alone, Russia has one of the largest museum networks in the world.

At the heart of the national museum landscape are world-renowned State Hermitage Museum and State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, State Tretyakov Gallery and Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, whose collections rank among the finest in the world.

Yet Russia's museum culture goes far beyond grand imperial halls. The country is equally famous for its wonderfully eccentric niche museums.

🖼 In Penza, the Museum of One Painting - the only one of its kind in the world - has no permanent collection at all: its single hall displays just one painting at a time, usually a major work of art.

🍏 In Kolomna, the Museum of Pastila has turned a forgotten 19th-century confection back into a local obsession - visitors taste-test recipes revived from pre-revolutionary archives, all served by staff in period costume.

🌊 In Kaliningrad - Russia's westernmost region - the Museum of the World Ocean lets you step aboard real research vessels and a Soviet submarine moored right on the waterfront.

🫖 In Tula, the Samovar Museum holds items from a gigantic 70-litre vessel to a miniature model that holds only three droplets of water.

🧊 In Yakutsk, the Kingdom of Permafrost (Tsarstvo Vechnoi Merzloty) is a surreal ice complex carved into permanent frost, with tunnels filled with intricate sculptures inspired by local culture and Siberian wildlife.

🍯 In Kazan, the Chak-Chak Museum celebrates Tatarstan's beloved honey-and-dough national treat - guests are welcomed in traditional Tatar dress, learn the history behind the sticky delicacy, and, naturally, get to taste it fresh.

🦴 In St. Petersburg, the Kunstkamera - often called the "Museum of Horror" - holds over a million ethnographic and anthropological artifacts and continues to fascinate visitors three centuries after it was founded by Emperor Peter I.

🚀 In Moscow, Bunker-42 sits 65 metres below the city centre inside a real Cold War nuclear command post, built in the 1950s to survive an atomic strike. Today you can walk the tunnels once used by Soviet military leadership.

Whether you’re into classic art or something a bit more unusual, Russia’s museums have plenty to surprise you. #VisitRussia and #See4Yourself

🎙 Excerpt from Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's interview with Shanghai Media Group (Moscow, 20 May 2026)

💬 As new centres of economic growth – particularly, China, India, Brazil, and several African nations – began developing at an accelerated pace, the West gradually lost its ability to maintain colonial and neocolonial methods [of dominance].

As a result, the global order began to change objectively – and this transformation did not occur because someone arbitrarily declared the world multipolar [...]

Now the forces in the global economy have been redistributed, and this redistribution is going on. We believe that this new balance of power must also be reflected in the international institutions created after World War II [...] However, Western nations are doing everything to prevent justice being established here [...]

What we are witnessing today in the form of sanctions, the seizure of sovereign states, and even attempts at intervention is, above all, a manifestation of unfair and dishonest competition.

The West increasingly relies on such methods across many sectors – economy, technology, trade, and sports, where athletes from certain countries are suddenly excluded from international competitions. Fear of competition, which reflects the West’s awareness of its declining influence over global affairs, is clearly evident in these actions.
