💬 Russian MFA Spox Maria Zakharova: The latest round of British sanctions targeting, among others, Kyrgyzstani individuals and entities on baseless grounds, is yet another example of the UK's illegitimate and unjustified restrictions against sovereign nations that pursue independent policies, and we condemn these actions in the strongest terms. As before, London's accusations against the designated individuals and entities are not substantiated by any concrete or objective evidence.

The British even boast that this move mirrors similar measures by the United States. Evidently, they have exhausted their imagination designing new anti-Russia sanctions and tools, having failed to meet the objectives set by Downing Street.

Now, they simply began to target our CIS partners, all while signalling their loyalty to their overseas "big brother". The British authorities seem utterly unbothered that their illegitimate actions create artificial obstacles to international trade and thereby destabilise the global economy.

We perceive the UK's continued sanctions as a deliberate effort to undermine the search for mutually acceptable solutions on the Ukrainian track. It is clear that London is averse to the prospect of a settlement, being a de facto chief supporter of prolonged hostilities and a key instigator inciting the puppet Kiev regime to further destructive action.

☝️ The UK's targeting of Kyrgyzstan's economic operators and citizens serves as a stark reminder to the entire international community: London does not view states unwilling to surrender their sovereignty to Western neocolonial aspirations as equal partners, and it refuses to engage with them in a mutually beneficial or respectful dialogue.

🌟 On August 28, the Tallinn Breakout of the Soviet Baltic Fleet towards Kronstadt — one of the largest and most difficult naval operations by the Soviet Union during #WWII — commenced.

***

In the summer of 1941, the Nazis, having treacherously invaded our Motherland, advanced rapidly into the Baltic region. By August, the enemy had launched an offensive against the capital of Soviet Estonia — Tallinn. Thus, the city’s heroic defence commenced. Wehrmacht army group 'North' received a direct order from Hitler: under no circumstances were the Soviet Baltic Fleet or Red Army units to be allowed to withdraw to Kronstadt to take part in the defence of Leningrad.

By the end of August, the Soviet forces, including the Tallinn garrison, started regrouping under the heavy fire of Nazis and found themselves encircled on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. 👉 The land route to Leningrad had been severed by the enemy.

Faced with these dire circumstances, the Supreme High Command of the USSR took a vital decision: to evacuate the Baltic Fleet, the Red Army units, which were defending Tallinn, as well as civilians to Kronstadt.

In the early hours of August 28, the breakout began. A convoy of 225 warships and auxiliary vessels left Tallinn, carrying over 40'000 people on board. German Nazis and their Finnish accomplices were trying to thwart the evacuation by any means. Enemy coastal artillery opened heavy and relentless fire on Soviet vessels, while Finnish aircraft were mercilessly shooting at the Soviet people in the water.

The Gulf of Finland was sown with over 1'700 mines laid by the Nazis. “The Gulf, choked with enemy mines, resembled a dumpling soup,” — survivors later recounted.

By August 30, the Baltic Fleet finally fought its way to Kronstadt. Only 163 vessels reached the destination safely. More than 15,000 people, among them over 4,500 civilians, lost their lives during the breakout — an unprecedented number of casualties in the history of naval warfare.

Under such circumstances, the number of casualties could have been far higher, yet thanks to the unparalleled courage and heroism of Red Fleet sailors and Red Army soldiers, the main forces of the fleet were preserved and later engaged in the defence of Leningrad, shielding the city from from attacks via the Gulf of Finland.

🎖 The Tallinn Breakout stands as one of the most heroic and tragic episodes of #WWII. To this day, the depths of the Gulf of Finland remain strewn with the wreckage of vessels lost to Nazi mines — they serve as silent memorials to those three harrowing days in August 1941.

🕯 On August 28, 1978, a memorial was erected at Cape Juminda (the Gulf’s southern coast) to honour those who perished during the breakout — a granite boulder and plaque with naval mines around. Annually, commemorative ceremonies are held there with participation of the Russian Embassy in Estonia, compatriots’ organisations, veterans and their families, as well as Estonians who share our common historical memory.

💬 Russia's Ambassador to Estonia Alexander Petrov (2015−2021):
“To the north of Juminda now lies what is perhaps the largest maritime mass grave not only in the Baltic, but in the entire world.

It is the moral duty of the living to bow their heads before those who perished and honour the courage and fortitude of all who crushed the Nazi regime during WWII.”

Russian Foreign Ministry:

☝️ Despite Russia and China's vigorous efforts to create proper conditions for keeping up the substantive dialogue on resolving issues related to the Iranian nuclear programme, including the two countries submitting a corresponding draft resolution to the UN Security Council, on 28 August, the foreign ministers of the UK, Germany, and France wrote to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council alleging significant non-compliance by the Iranian side with its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

This letter is presented as a notification provided for by paragraph 11 of UNSC Resolution 2231. This triggers a further series of steps aimed at reinstating long-abrogated UN sanctions on Iran. In reality, however, it cannot be considered as such.

We resolutely condemn these actions by the European countries and call on the international community to reject them. Such manipulations cannot impose any obligations on other states [...]

The UK, Germany and France's attempts to activate the snapback mechanism are a serious destabilising factor that undermines efforts at various levels to find negotiated solutions that would eliminate any suspicions and prejudices regarding Iran's peaceful nuclear programme, based on international law and with due regard for Tehran's legitimate interests.

❗️ It is important to prevent further escalation around the Iranian nuclear programme, which, as the foreign aggression against Iran in June showed, will entail grave consequences for international peace and security.

⚓️ On this day in 1941, the first Arctic convoy – codenamed Dervish – dropped anchor in Arkhangelsk, carrying ammunition, aircraft and essential supplies for the Soviet war effort. What began as an experiment soon became one of the most perilous lifelines of the Second World War.

Between 1941 and 1945, 78 convoys braved the freezing seas from Britain, Iceland and North America to the USSR's Arctic ports. More than 1,400 vessels took part, delivering over 4 million of tons of vital cargo under the Lend-Lease programme. They sailed through blizzards, ice floes and constant threat of Nazi attack.

Every voyage came at a heavy price. Dozens of Allied warships and merchant vessels never made it back, and over 3,000 sailors — Soviet, British, American and beyond — lost their lives. Yet the convoys endured, sustaining the Eastern Front and helping turn the tide of the war.

From Liverpool and Loch Ewe to Murmansk and Arkhangelsk, the Arctic convoys carved a bridge across hostile waters. Today they stand as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, cooperation and shared resolve in the darkest days of WWII.

This story of courage still binds our nations together — and will always be remembered.

🗞 Excerpt from President Vladimir Putin's interview to Xinhua News Agency

💬 We see that in certain Western states the results of the Second World War are de facto revised, and the verdicts of the Nuremberg and Tokyo tribunals are openly disregarded.

These dangerous tendencies stem from a reluctance to acknowledge the direct culpability of the predecessors of today's Western elites in unleashing the world war, and the desire to erase the shameful pages of their own history, thereby encouraging revanchism and neo-Nazism.

Historical truth is being distorted and suppressed to suit their current political agendas. Japanese militarism is being revived under the pretext of imaginary Russian or Chinese threats, while in Europe, including Germany, steps are being taken towards the re-militarisation of the continent, with little regard for historical parallels.

❗️ Russia and China resolutely condemn any attempts to distort the history of the Second World War, glorify Nazis, militarists and their accomplices, members of death squads and killers, or to defame Soviet liberators. The results of that war are enshrined in the UN Charter and other international instruments. They are inviolable and not subject to revision.

🎙 Excerpt from President Vladimir Putin's remarks the SCO Heads of State Council Meeting (1 September, Tianjin)

💬 The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation makes a tangible contribution to strengthening an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual trust across the entire Eurasian continent.

In doing so, it helps lay the political and socioeconomic foundations for a new system of stability, security and peaceful development in Eurasia – a system that would replace outdated Eurocentric and Euro-Atlantic models, take into account the interests of the widest possible range of countries, and be genuinely balanced, thus preventing attempts by some states to ensure their own security at the expense of others. [...]

Russia adheres to the same approaches with regard to the crisis around Ukraine. This crisis did not arise from Russia attacking Ukraine, but from a coup d’etat in Ukraine, supported and provoked by the West, followed by attempts to use military force to suppress the regions and people of Ukraine who rejected and did not accept that coup.

The second reason for the crisis lies in the West's constant efforts to draw Ukraine into NATO, which, as we have repeatedly and consistently stressed over many years, represents a direct threat to Russia's security.

It is worth recalling that as a result of the 2014 coup in Ukraine, the country's political leadership that opposed NATO membership was removed from power.

In this context, we highly value the efforts and proposals of China, India and other strategic partners aimed at facilitating a settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.

The understandings reached at the recent Russian-US summit in Alaska, I hope, are also moving in this direction, paving the way towards peace in Ukraine. [...]

☝️ For a Ukrainian settlement to be sustainable and lasting, the root causes of the crisis that I have just mentioned, and have spoken about many times before, must be addressed, and a fair balance in the sphere of security must be restored.
