🎙 Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on the 10th anniversary of the beginning of Ukrainian Euromaidan

💬 Anti-government riots started on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) ten years ago, on November 21, 2013. They triggered the current disaster in Ukraine and, at the same time, took it to the point of no return.

Skilled US and European-trained provocateurs brought crowds of people into the streets under the attractive slogans of “a better European life,” visa-free travel to the EU countries, democracy, freedom of speech, human rights and an anti-corruption struggle. <...>

In January and February of 2014, artificially encouraged riots developed into an armed mutiny and ended in an anti-constitutional coup that was rejected by residents of many districts of the country.

The November 2013 events were triggered by the government’s decision to suspend the planned signing of the EU Association Agreement.

☝️I’d like to emphasise that it was only about the suspension of the signing of the agreement, not its cancellation. The problem was that the new commitments Kiev was to assume under the EU Association Agreement were at odds with its obligations to the CIS free trade zone. <...>

❗️In November 2013, the West and the radical neo-Nazi Ukrainian opposition went all-out to finally change Ukraine’s multi-vector course and put its economy and politics into the neocolonialist Western coordinate system. <...>

It is appropriate to ask today what the events on Euromaidan have given Ukraine?

👉 The answer is obvious. The self-sufficient, industrial and populous republic of the former USSR has turned into a poor, dying territory. Ukraine has lost its state independence. It is on the Western colonialists’ payroll who now determine its domestic and foreign policy. <...>

💬 On 21 November 2013, ten years ago, the Maidan protests began in Kiev, leading to a bloody coup d’état that had tragic consequences for Ukraine, as well as for regional and global stability. Remarkably, the overtly nationalistic mass riots that preceded this event were held under the slogans of European values, freedom and democracy.

The Maidan rally was a pretext for creating the conflict. Russia has always tried to resolve it by political means. The West, however, as it turned out, always sought to provoke an escalation.

On 14 January 2014, Jose Manuel Barroso, then President of the European Commission, said:

“It was on the streets of Kiev we have seen Europe at its most popular: a beacon of hope and values, a guarantee of human rights and liberties. Around diplomatic tables, we have seen Europe at its best: united in defending Ukrainian citizens' dignity and opinions; ready to support their sovereign right to decide on their own destiny, and to improve their chances of a better, more prosperous and more democratic future”.

A guarantee of human rights, seriously?

⚠️European leaders said nothing when the Ukrainian government unleashed a real war against the eastern part of its country in 2014. Ukrainian armed forces have been shelling Donbass all these years. An inhumane socio-economic and transport blockade was imposed on its inhabitants, bringing the region to the brink of survival. This destructive line of Kiev was supported by the United States and its NATO allies.

In early 2022, the situation deteriorated sharply. The population of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics faced a real threat of direct physical annihilation by the authorities in Kiev.

❗️Russia had no choice but to recognise the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics on 21 February 2022 and to launch a special military operation on 24 February 2022 to protect Donbass, demilitarise and denazify Ukraine, and eliminate threats to Russian security.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at the 41st meeting of the Council of the Heads of Constituent Entities of the Russian Federation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Moscow, November 20, 2023)

💬 We are for culture remaining outside any political processes, conflicts, or crises. It should know no boundaries.

We are ready to develop cooperation in this sphere with all countries, especially those whose leaders support promoting contacts in this area, but we are not closing the door to cultural and artistic figures from the countries that are currently led by unfriendly governments.

👉 It is important to pursue Russia’s scientific and academic potential. Many regional centres accommodate unique higher education institutions, research organisations, and research infrastructure.

👉 We are interested in seeing the number of foreign students studying at Russian universities grow. We would like to encourage regional education institutions to maintain ties with their graduates.

👉 We are interested in promoting the status of the Russian language, especially in the countries that border Russia, as well as expanding educational programmes in Russian, including for migrant workers.

👉 International relations in sports, youth exchanges, and the volunteer movement deserve special mention.

👉 You are aware of our focus on tourism. We want foreign tourists to increasingly see Russia as a preferred destination.

The cultural potential of the regions can and should be used to strengthen cooperation within new types of multilateral associations involving Russia. I am talking about #BRICS, in which we will assume chairmanship next year.

2️⃣1️⃣ November marks the tenth anniversary of the Euromaidan in Ukraine, which led to an unconstitutional coup d’état, pogroms, high casualty rates, the rise to power of a neo-Nazi clique and the subsequent armed operation by Kiev against its own citizens, accompanied by the banning of the Russian language, killings of journalists, censorship of the media, demolition of monuments, closure of museums and promotion of Nazism.

As a result, Kiev🇺🇦 has been violating its obligations at UNESCO and flouting the fundamental principles of the Organisation:
- the principle of cultural diversity and respect for minority cultures;
- the principle of ensuring multilingualism,
- the right to mother-tongue education,
-freedom of expression and safety of journalists,
-the protection and defence of cultural heritage,
-countering racism, neo-Nazism and other radical practices,
- preventing the spread of hate speech.

🎙 President Vladimir Putin took part in an extraordinary #BRICS summit on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, being held via videoconference.

💬 Vladimir Putin: The thousands of deaths and mass expulsion of civilians, the humanitarian disaster unfolding in the area are causing deep concern.

And all of that is, in fact, happening as a consequence of the US’ aspiration to monopolise the mediation role in the Palestinian-Israeli settlement process and block the activities of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators.

☝️ Because of the sabotage of UN decisions, which clearly called for the establishment and peaceful coexistence of two independent and sovereign states – Israel and Palestine – more than one generation of Palestinians has grown up in an atmosphere of injustice, and Israelis cannot fully guarantee the security of their state either.

It is worth noting that all BRICS countries have similar positions on the need to collectively reach long-term and durable settlement of the long-standing Palestinian-Israeli problem.

👉 The most urgent goal is to reach a truly long-term and sustainable truce. It is important that other states not get drawn into a war in the Middle East and that the conflict not spread in any way, as is preserving the fragile peace between religions.

📅 #OTD in 1943, the Allies leaders representing the USSR, the United States, and the United Kingdom opened their first World War II-era conference.

🇷🇺🇺🇸🇬🇧 From November 28 to December 1, 1943, the Big Three — Chairman of the Council of People’s Commissars Joseph Stalin, President of the United States Franklin Roosevelt, and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Winston Churchill — gathered in Tehran to discuss key strategic matters for the Allies with a special focus on opening the Second Front in Europe.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of the Red Army’s strategic advances in the summer and autumn of 1943, which helped convince the Western leaders of the inevitable defeat of the Third Reich and the need to outline a post-war framework for Europe.

In Tehran, the leaders reached a preliminary agreement on the Polish border, tracing it along the so-called Curzon Line of 1920 in the east and along the River Oder in the west, which meant that territories of western Ukraine and Belarus were rightfully recognized as parts of the USSR.

🤝 To sum up the conference proceedings, the Leaders issued the Declaration of the Three Powers, stating that they had concerted their plans for the destruction of the German forces and reached complete agreement as to the scope and timing of the operations to be undertaken from the east, west and south. In the declaration, they also expressed their determination to work together in war and in the peace that [would] follow.

📄 From the document: “We came here with hope and determination. We leave here, friends in fact, in spirit and in purpose.”

On November 29, at the Soviet Embassy in Tehran, Churchill presented Stalin, with the Sword of Stalingrad, a ceremonial longsword forged by command of King of Great Britain George VI as a token of homage to the courage and heroism the Soviet people in general and the defenders of Stalingrad in particular.

#Ukraine

The Euromaidan, alongside other factors, resulted in the division of society, a surge in nationalism, social upheavals, and the substitution of a state based on solid foundations for legal nihilism, causing profound disruption in Ukraine. These developments led to the persecution of the Russian language and history, deterioration of the socioeconomic situation, the emergence of a repressive dictatorship, and civil war.

#Sanctions

Anti-Russia sanctions have created even greater risks for global food security. However, in response to our calls, the EU continues to tighten the sanctions. The ban on transit of EU agricultural output for third countries through Russia directly affects the agro-industrial sector of other states.

🎙 From Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's answers to questions at the Primakov Readings International Forum (Moscow, November 27 2023)

💬 Regarding a potential transformation of the West, I happen to have a quote with me:

✍️ “It has long been possible to foresee that this rabid hatred against Russia, which has been kindled in the West for 30 years, more and more with each passing year, would explode someday. This moment is upon us. Russia has simply been offered suicide, the renunciation of the very foundations of its being, a solemn recognition that it is nothing more in this world than a wild and ugly phenomenon, like an evil that needs to be corrected. There is no need to deceive ourselves any longer: Russia will in all likelihood have to get to grips with the whole of Europe.” Fyodor Tyutchev, 1854.

I cannot say that this is the ultimate truth, but it is a fact that Russia was never much liked, and that it was only used for situational coalitions (with France, Britain, Germany and Austro-Hungary).

***

I do not believe that the West has a mission to hate Russia. But how quickly they gave up those delicate phrases and assurances that we have a shared security system or economic space from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and generally one space. How quickly the instincts of uniting Europe against Russia prevailed again.

🗓 On November 30 and December 1, the OSCE Ministerial Council will meet in Skopje, North Macedonia, for its 30th regular meeting, which Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov plans to attend.

<…>

The main theme at the upcoming meeting will be the crisis situation within the OSCE. We hope to be able to discuss all the outstanding issues

<…>

👉 The current profound crisis within the OSCE is the result of destructive actions by certain Western countries, which are using the organisation in their own interests and violating its fundamental principles. The OSCE agenda has been focused on Ukraine since 2022.

<…>

Russian delegates at OSCE governing body meetings consistently draw attention to the most pressing issues within the organisation's zone of responsibility:

• combating terrorism and drug trafficking,
• safeguarding traditional values,
• countering neo-Nazism, preventing the distortion of history, and addressing Christianophobia and Islamophobia.

The Russian delegation to the OSCE regularly updates the delegations of other member states on progress towards the objectives of the special military operation and provides objective information regarding war crimes committed by the Kiev regime, attacks on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the extensive campaign in Ukraine to "cancel" the Russian language and culture, and the persecution of Russian media.
