⚡️ Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on crimes committed by Australian military personnel in Afghanistan

💬 We have taken note of the ruling by an Australian court in the defamation case brought by retired Corporal of Australia’s Special Air Service (SAS) Benjamin Roberts-Smith against Fairfax Media. He filed the suit following the publication of a journalistic inquiry which concluded that the SAS corporal committed war crimes during his deployment with the Australian forces in Afghanistan.

Having scrutinised the journalists’ story, the court ruled that they reliably proved their information about the crimes committed by Benjamin Roberts-Smith, including the murder of three unarmed Afghans.

☝️ Back in 2020, when the media began reporting about the war crimes committed by the Australian military in Afghanistan, Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force Paul Brereton published the results of an in-house investigation (the Brereton Report), according to which 25 current or former special forces personnel were involved in the murder of 39 civilians or prisoners in Afghanistan. He recommended turning the materials over to the police for launching a criminal investigation and calling the guilty to account.

To date, only former SAS soldier Oliver Schulz has been charged with the murder of an unarmed Afghan citizen. Consequently, the ruling taken in the case of Benjamin Roberts-Smith will not necessarily lead to charges of criminal liability.

The attempts by the establishment to dampen public outcry exclusively with palliative measures is evidence of the double standards and hypocrisy of the Australian political class, which refuses to recognise its own mistakes when accusing others of “non-compliance with Western standards.”

❗️ Vladimir Putin on the use of nuclear weapons at #SPIEF2023:

▪️ Russia does not need to use nuclear weapons;

▪️ Russia has more nuclear weapons than NATO countries, they want us to reduce them - this will not happen;

▪️ Russia has moved the first part of the nuclear warheads to Belarus, but by the end of the summer, by the end of the year, we will complete the task in full. This is an element of deterrence, a signal to those who are thinking about inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia;

▪️ US once using nuclear weapons, set a precedent.

❗️ Vladimir Putin on NATO's involvement in the Ukrainian conflict at #SPIEF2023:

▪️ NATO is drawn into the war in Ukraine;

▪️ US instead of contacts with Russia, has chosen to supply equipment to Ukraine, we will burn it - let's see what happens next;

▪️ If F-16s are based abroad, let's see how to hit them, this is a serious danger of further involvement of NATO;

▪️ I do not rule out that if there had been a different administration in US, then perhaps it would have been possible to take a different path in the situation with Ukraine.

⚡️ Press release on the United States’ plan to rejoin UNESCO

The US State Department has sent an official notice to the UNESCO Secretariat stating that the United States intends to rejoin UNESCO, which the Americans withdrew from in 2018.

The advocates of this plan have initiated an extraordinary session of the UNESCO General Assembly to be held on June 29 and 30. The agenda for the extraordinary session is expected to include the issue of settling financial aspects in the context of the outstanding debt of $612 million that the United States owes to the agency.

☝️ The plan submitted to the UNESCO member countries for consideration is practically an ultimatum by Washington as it provides for reinstating the voting right and the passive electoral right of UNESCO’s biggest debtor.

It is also important that in addition to the practical task of “zeroing out” the accumulated debt, the Americans are not making a secret of the political motive that underlies their decision. In particular, the State Department says that its objective is to counter China’s influence in UNESCO and promote other national interests of the United States.

As a responsible member country of UNESCO, which is strongly committed to the agency’s principles and goals, Russia supports the efforts to strengthen universal intergovernmental cooperation in culture, science and education and believes UNESCO has nothing to do with confrontation.

The Russian Federation is ready to welcome the reintegration of the United States. <...> However, as it moves towards achieving this objective, the US should not act in the spirit of the notorious rules-based order and violate UNESCO’s constitution or other standards, and primarily the US should pay off its astronomical debt unconditionally and in full.
We would like to remind the UNESCO executive authorities that all of the agency’s current and future member countries need to strictly observe the agency’s constitution.

❗️There should be no exceptions from the rules set for everyone.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to a question from Rossiya 1 television channel (June 15, 2023)

Question: French President Emmanuel Macron is very unhappy about Russia’s involvement in Africa, in particular, your actions. He spoke at length about our country preying on anti-French sentiments and stirring them up. Unlike Russia, Paris is offering a “strategy of love.” Which strategy will we offer the African countries?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: We are offering the strategy of equality. Paris has a lot of work to do to get there. I was surprised by numerous statements by President Macron and other French officials regarding what you have mentioned. These statements are unbecoming of leaders of the democratic world.

☝️ Democracy is not only for domestic consumption. The West believes it has the right to impose its domestic democratic rules on others. The principle of the UN Charter – the sovereign equality of states – applies in the international arena. The West has a long way to go to fulfil its obligation under the UN Charter.

✈️ #OTD in 1937, three Soviet aviators set off on the legendary non-stop flight from Moscow to Vancouver via the North Pole. The crew – commander Valery Chkalov, co-pilot Georgy Baidukov and navigator Alexander Belyakov – pursued an ambitious goal: to connect the continents along the shortest route, across the Arctic Ocean, for the first time in history.

🧊 Soviet aircraft designer Andrei Tupolev developed the ANT-25, a single-engine aircraft with an especially wide wingspan, specifically for this endeavour and for other long-haul flights. Due to this design, the plane could take more fuel, and had a better capability to glide.

🧊 The flight took a total of 63 hours and 16 minutes. The Arctic weather with its low temperatures gave the crew the greatest trouble. The ice from the cockpit windows had to be cut off by hand with a sheath knife. Because of the clouds, the crew had to either pilot the plane blindly or change course, and overspent about 300 litres of fuel.

🧊 Initially, the crew planned to land in San Francisco, but due to excessive fuel consumption, it was decided to land in Vancouver. They failed to break the world flight range record, but in less than a month this was achieved by another Soviet crew under the command of Mikhail Gromov.

🧊 Despite this, Valery Chkalov and his crew's flight became a major event in the history of world aviation. It showcased Soviet achievement in advanced aircraft construction, and proved to the whole world the exceptional professionalism and courage of Soviet aviators.

🤝 The feat of the three pilots was widely covered by the press, both in the Soviet Union and in America. US President Franklin D. Roosevelt personally received the crew in the Oval Office of the White House. The transpolar flight contributed to the establishment of friendly relations between the two countries, and paved the way for fruitful cooperation between the USSR and the United States during World War II.
