⚡️ FM statement on the report released by the OPCW Investigation and Identification Team regarding the April 7, 2018, Douma chemical attack

Read in full

In connection with the release of yet another fabricated concoction by OPCW’s so-called Investigation and Identification Team (IIT), which, in violation of the provisions contained in the Chemical Weapons Convention & the UN Charter, has been tasked by the US and its allies to assign responsibility for using chemical weapons, and a follow-up joint statement issued by countries waging a collective war against Russia, to use Foreign Minister of Germany Annalena Baerbock’s words, the Foreign Ministry would like to note the following👇

While unrelated to the subject of this would-be investigation, the clumsy attempts by the report’s authors and their sponsors to create an impression that Russia controlled the Syrian armed forces near Douma at the time of the incident can be viewed as further proof that this report is a politicised put-up job.

<...>

The experienced hand of NATO secret services is clearly visible through the text of the report. Still, it is ironic that even though it was Washington & the capitals serving its interests who ordered the report for political purposes, as far as the facts are concerned, the IIT authors confirmed that there was no need for the Syrian special forces to use two industrial cylinders with chlorine in military action. In reality, falsifiers from the White Helmets brought these cylinders to the residential building.

<...>

It is obvious that the IIT’s task, which it failed to fulfil, consisted of justifying the aggression by the US, Great Britain & France against Syria, who used the Douma incident as a pretext for carrying out a massive missile strike against Syria’s civilian & military sites just one week after the staged chemical incident on April 14, 2018, in violation of the fundamental international norms & principles.

❗️ Russia condemns the fact that the West manipulates what used to be a respected international body.
🎙Embassy comment on former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s claims

During Boris Johnson’s telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 2, 2022 former UK PM apparently perceived a looming threat coming from the Russian side of a missile strike directed against him personally.

While intentionally violating the privacy of leaders’ conversation Mr Johnson also managed to distort its content and give it exactly the opposite meaning. Speaking of threats President Putin stressed that should NATO missiles be deployed near the Russia-Ukraine border, their flying time to central Russia, including Moscow, would be reduced to 7-8 minutes.

❗️Such statements only lead to further escalation of the acute military and political tensions in the European continent, in which the UK is getting more and more involved by the day.

🎙 Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov’s interview with RIA Novosti (January 30, 2023)

Key points:

• Multiple problems have piled up in our bilateral relations. As you might imagine, the root cause lies in the US policy towards Russia.

• Unfortunately, during all recent years, Washington was guided by the principle that its egoistic interest is all that matters, while all the rest can be ignored. This is why we were seeing a deliberate dismantling of the entire arms control structure.

• The New START treaty may also fall victim to this approach. We are ready for this scenario. However, we are not hiding that this is not our choice.

• It would be rational to take a different path – to resume the discussion of strategic stability and start working on a new security equation that would consider all factors affecting strategic stability.

• Obviously, the United States is not only the main driver of this entire crisis in Ukraine but also its biggest beneficiary. In part, Washington views Ukraine as a testing ground for the products of its defence manufacturers.

• Sadly, the level of US expertise on Russian issues has declined precipitously during the past decade. If not for that, Washington would have pursued a much more sensible and adequate policy towards Russia.

• We consider Russian-US consultations useful for comparing our positions. We hope the tactics of small steps will allow us to eventually find mutually acceptable solutions to the most important issues on our bilateral agenda.
