🇷🇺 February 23 is Russia’s Day of Military Glory. Defender of the Fatherland Day.

🌟 On February 23, 1918, near the villages of Bolshoye and Maloye Lopatino outside Pskov, fighters of the Second Red Army Regiment engaged an advance detachment of German troops marching toward Petrograd (St Petersburg). At the initiative of the Petrograd Soviet, this date came to be regarded as the founding day of the Red Army.

The name of the holiday changed several times. In the 1930s-1940s it was known as Red Army Day. In the post-war period – as Soviet Army and Navy Day.

📄 In 1993, the Russian Federation established February 23 as a professional holiday for servicemen, designating it as the Day of All Defenders of the Fatherland.

In 1995, the date was included in the official list of Russia’s Days of Military Glory, and in 2006 the current name was formally approved – #DefenderOfTheFatherlandDay.

Each year on February 23, we honour the heroic history of the Russian Army and Navy and pay tribute to all those who fought for the freedom and independence of the Fatherland.

February 23 stands as a symbol of military valour, continuity of generations, and respect for those who have defended – and continue to defend – the Fatherland.

🇷🇺The city of Kirov (until 1934 - Vyatka, earlier Khlynov) is one of the oldest cities in Russia, founded in 1374, an important trade and craft center on the way from Novgorod to the Volga region.

In Kirov was born the famous painter Viktor Vasnetsov, the author of such famous paintings as "Alyonushka" and "Bogatyrs".

From 1848 to 1855, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin worked here in exile (the mansion where he lived has been preserved and is now a museum). And Sergei Kirov (born Kostrikov) was born in the south of Vyatka Province, in the city of Urzhum.

❄️In snow-covered Kirov, you can feel the New Year's atmosphere on the Theatre Square, go down the completely pedestrian at this time of year Spasskaya Street, to the Holy Trinity Cathedral with beautiful frescoes and iconostasis, look at the city from the high banks of the Vyatka River on the embankment of Alexander Grin, also a native of the Vyatka province, and to the Alexander's Church - a unique monument of neo-Gothic architecture of the early 20th century.

📆 #OTD On February 23, 1879, the Russian and Soviet artist Kazimir Malevich was born.

Throughout his career, the master painted in various styles: neo-primitivism, impressionism, alogism, and cubism. However, none of them reflected his view of reality, so Malevich developed a new direction, one of the largest in abstract art, called Suprematism, ideas of which were later used not only in painting but also in such fields as design, architecture, and cinema.

🖼 Among his most recognizable works are the world-famous "Black Square", “White on White," and "Suprematist Composition," which have become symbols of artistic exploration and the reinterpretation of the role of form and color in art.

Currently, Malevich's paintings are presented in the permanent collections of the State Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery and are regularly included in international exhibitions dedicated to the avant-garde and the history of abstractionism.
