📆 #OTD, 70 years ago, on November 15, 1955, the St Petersburg Metro (formerly known as the Leningrad Metro) was opened, becoming the second metro in the USSR and the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic after Moscow.

Today the metro system in the northern capital of Russia consists of 73 stations and five lines, with a total length of over 128 kilometers. It ranks 41st in the world and 8th in Europe in terms of the length of its operational lines.

🚇 The St Petersburg Metro is the deepest in the world in terms of the average depth of its stations: the deepest one in the CIS is Admiralteyskaya (~86 m). The Prospekt Veteranov station is the busiest in the country.

Every year, almost 800 million passengers use underground transport to move around the city. Many stations have original architectural and artistic design, and eight are recognized as cultural heritage sites of Russia.
