🎙 President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin held a meeting on preparations for the Russian-American Summit, which will take place on August 15 in Anchorage (August 14, 2025)

💬 I have asked you to gather today to brief you on the progress of negotiations regarding the Ukraine crisis and the bilateral talks with the Ukrainian delegation. Many of those present are already broadly aware of the situation, but I will provide more detailed information. That is the first matter.

Second, I will update you on the current stage of our engagement with the present US administration, which, as everyone knows, has been making what I consider to be fairly vigorous and sincere efforts to halt hostilities, resolve the crisis, and reach agreements that serve the interests of all parties involved in this conflict.

The aim is to establish long-term conditions for peace not only between our countries but also in Europe and indeed globally — especially if we proceed to subsequent stages involving agreements on strategic offensive arms control.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answers to media questions (August 15, Anchorage)

Question: Is this your first time in Alaska?

Sergey Lavrov: I’ve been here before.

Question: President of the United States Donald Trump has said that there is a 25 percent chance the talks will not be successful. What is Russia’s estimate?

Sergey Lavrov: We never try to anticipate the outcome or make any guesses. What we do know, however, is that we have arguments we can contribute to the discussion and that our position is clear. We will present it.

In fact, much has been accomplished already during the visits by the US President’s Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff. President Vladimir Putin has mentioned this fact. Steve Witkoff spoke on behalf of President Donald Trump. I hope that we will be able to continue this productive conversation tomorrow.

Question: Do you feel nervous?

Sergey Lavrov: What’s that?

🎙 Comment by Aide to the President of Russia Yury Ushakov following the telephone conversation between Vladimir Putin and President of the United States Donald Trump (August 19, 2025)

💬 Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Donald Trump, at the US President’s initiative.

The President of Russia expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his US colleague for the hospitality and perfect arrangements at the Alaska Summit, as well as for the progress they were able to achieve towards bringing about a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis.

The President of the United States informed his Russian counterpart about the talks he had just concluded at the White House with Vladimir Zelensky and leaders of several European countries.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump then reaffirmed their commitment to continuing direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations.

In this connection, among other things, they discussed the prospect of exploring opportunities for drawing higher ranking officials from both Ukraine and Russia into these direct talks.

It is quite telling that Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump agreed to keep in touch with one another on the Ukrainian issue and other urgent international and bilateral matters.

The President of Russia highlighted the importance of Donald Trump’s personal efforts and commitment to finding solutions for a lasting settlement in Ukraine.

The conversation was quite frank and constructive.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with VGTRK (Moscow, August 19, 2025)

Key points:

• It showed without any doubt, that the US Leader and his team are sincere in their commitment to achieving tangible results by bringing about something lasting, durable, and sustainable. This is what sets them apart from the Europeans who, at the time, shouted at every corner that they would not accept anything but a ceasefire, and even after that would go on supplying weapons to Ukraine.

• President of the United States Donald Trump and his team have developed a clear understanding of the fact that this conflict has its causes which means that the claims made by some European presidents and prime ministers about Russia’s "unprovoked" attack on Ukraine are nothing but childish babble.

• Some of these [European] leaders, for example Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, are still talking about the need to pressure Russia with sanctions. Not a single one of these gentlemen mentioned the term human rights. <...> But if you look back from where we are today and remember what they have been saying about Ukraine for all these years, you will not find any references to human rights.

• From the standpoint of language and religion, the UN Charter is being flagrantly violated in Ukraine. It is important to recall that Zelensky declared in Washington that, while he was prepared to engage in negotiations, he would not entertain any discussions about territorial concessions, as these are prohibited by the Constitution.

• When these [European] delegates in Washington insisted that efforts must commence with formulating security guarantees for Ukraine – and simultaneously for Europe – not once did they mention Russia’s security.

• Without respect for Russia’s security interests, without full recognition of the rights of ethnic Russians and Russian speakers in Ukraine, no lasting agreements are possible – for these are precisely the issues requiring urgent resolution in the context of the crisis settlement.

• The Alaska Summit demonstrated that the US administration is genuinely committed to a settlement not aimed at once again preparing Ukraine for war (as was the case after the Minsk agreements), but at ensuring this crisis never recurs – guaranteeing the lawful rights of all states in this region and the peoples who live there.

• We did not discuss the sanctions. Many of our experts, politicians and officials have repeatedly stated that lifting the sanctions may have adverse effects. That would create illusions for some economic sectors that now we can finally overcome the problems by returning to the strategies developed and implemented in the 1990s and the early 2000s.

We are not rejecting any forms of work, either bilateral or trilateral. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said it multiple times. It is important that any formats, 1+1, 1+2, or multilateral ones, which exist in abundance, including within the UN, are not exploited for the purpose of media coverage, in morning newspapers or in evening news, or on social media, to skim the propaganda cream off the top. These formats are designed for step-by-step, consistent preparations for summits, from the expert level and up. We will always support this sort of serious approach. Any contacts involving top officials must be prepared extremely carefully.

⚛️ In 2024, Russia marks the 4️⃣0️⃣th anniversary of the launch of the first power unit at the Zaporozhskaya nuclear power plant (ZNPP).

With the participation of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Rosatom State Corporation, and other Russian government bodies, a series of documentary films has been produced, tracing the history of ZNPP and its return to Russia’s nuclear energy system.

The first episode explores the key stages in the plant’s development — from its construction and the commissioning of the first power unit in 1984, to its expansion and ongoing operations. The film highlights ZNPP’s status as the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and the world’s first to generate 1 trillion kWh of electricity.

At the core of the story are the efforts made by the Russian Federation during the special military operation to safeguard the ZNPP and ensure the protection of the residents of the city of Energodar, who, in 2022, voted in favour of accession to the Russian Federation.

🇷🇺🤝🇿🇦 Moscow and Tshwane strengthen inter-parliamentary dialogue within #BRICS framework

On August 20, 2025, a video conference took place between the Chairman of the #Moscow City Duma, Alexey Shaposhnikov, and the Speaker of the Tshwane City Council (South Africa), Mncedi Ndzwanana. Russian Ambassador to South Africa Roman Ambarov also participated in the meeting.

The discussion focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and exploring the integration of South African representatives into the BRICS Capitals Parliamentary Movement.

💬 Chairman Alexey Shaposhnikov emphasized that Russia and South Africa share similar perspectives on key global challenges.
“Russia and South Africa share common views on major global challenges. The Moscow City Duma is advancing the BRICS Capitals Parliamentary Movement – an initiative aimed at fostering direct ties between legislators of friendly countries at the capital and megacity level, complementing traditional diplomacy with new channels of communication. We are inviting the Tshwane City Council to join this initiative: 11 legislative bodies from other BRICS capitals have already expressed their readiness to participate and sign a joint statement.”

Alexey Shaposhnikov also extended an invitation to the Tshwane delegation to attend the BRICS International Municipal Forum, scheduled to take place in St. Petersburg in October 2025. As part of the forum, the Moscow City Duma plans to organize a special session on the role of parliamentary diplomacy in creating a favorable investment climate and responding to global economic challenges.

💬 Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana emphasized the value of participating in the BRICS forum and the Parliamentary Movement [retranslated]:
“It is a great honour to be invited to this briefing on the upcoming BRICS International Municipal Forum in St. Petersburg and the Parliamentary Movement of BRICS Capitals, spearheaded by the Moscow City Duma.
Participating in the forum would allow us to broaden our international cooperation and build mutually beneficial partnerships through the BRICS Capitals platform – for the benefit of our residents. Tshwane is ready to develop in this direction, with the aim of improving quality of life and enhancing municipal services, especially in the areas of housing and public utilities.”

❗️Ambassador Roman #Ambarov welcomed the initiative and commended the efforts of all parties to engage in direct dialogue. He stressed that interregional cooperation has long been a priority for both the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy in South Africa. Such ties, he said, create valuable opportunities for collaboration in trade, investment, and humanitarian fields.

🗓 86 years ago — on August 23, 1939 — the Soviet Union and Germany signed the Non-Aggression Treaty in Moscow.

This document was an important achievement of the Soviet diplomacy ahead of #WWII: the USSR was able to buy time to better prepare to repel Hitler’s impending attack, which had been seen as inevitable due to the failed policy of “appeasement” by Western European states and their refusal to forge a collective security agreement with our nation against Nazism.

Signing the non-aggression treaty with Germany was a difficult but necessary decision by the Soviet leadership, driven by national security considerations and the urgent need to deter Nazi aggression in the east.

***

In the 1930s, twenty years after the end of World War I, the threat of a new large-scale armed conflict in Europe began to grow. A key factor for this was the crisis of the Versailles system of international relations, designed by Britain and France, which paved the way for rising revanchist sentiments in the states it had humiliated — Germany and Italy.

With the Nazis’ rise to power in Germany, the threat of a new war in Europe became real. Hitler’s misanthropic ideology was rooted in the notorious doctrine of “racial superiority.” The Nazis used this doctrine to justify Germany’s pursuit of world domination. In this way, an absolute evil emerged at the heart of Europe, endangering the peace and freedom of entire nations.

By the mid-1930s, it became evident that another German aggression in Europe was inevitable — it was merely a matter of time. In an effort to counter the rising threat of German revanchism, the Soviet Union suggested the creation of a collective security system in Europe, founded on anti-fascist principles, to unite efforts and deliver a joint response to the common threat.

Yet in Paris and London, where anti-Soviet sentiments ran deep, the idea of cooperation with Moscow was rejected as such. Instead, Western powers sought to strike a deal with Germany, aiming to pacify the Germans through unilateral concessions. The political establishments of the West failed to grasp the existential threat posed by Nazi ideology, cynically believing that Hitler’s aggression could be redirected eastward.

The “appeasement” tactics whetted the aggressor’s appetite. In March 1938, with the connivance of Paris and London, Hitler carried out the Anschluss of Austria. In September, following the criminal “Munich conspiracy” and with the approval of the UK and France, he cynically dismembered the sovereign state of Czechoslovakia. Warsaw, which was interested in getting part of Czechoslovakia’s territory for itself, prohibited flights of Soviet aircraft to render aid to Czechoslovak army. Already a de facto accomplice of Hitler, Poland had supported every single foreign policy move of the Reich.

❗️ A new war in Europe became inevitable.

Thus, “appeasement” policy ended in total failure. Attempting to sate the Nazis’ insatiable ambitions, the Western powers failed to restrain the aggressor or thwart its criminal plans.

The Soviet Union remained the only European power still striving to organise collective resistance against Nazi Germany. In the spring and summer of 1939, the USSR initiated consultations with France and Britain in Moscow. However, the negotiation process failed to yield practical results — the Western powers that until the last moment hoped for a compromise with Hitler, engaged in secret talks with Germany behind the Soviet Union’s back.

👉 The Soviet diplomacy ran out of chances to build a collective security system in Europe. Moscow also had to take into account the Japanese factor — the hostilities on the Khalkhin-Gol that began in May 1939. The Soviet leadership could not afford a war on two fronts.

By August 1939, several European nations had concluded non-aggression pacts with Hitler. The Soviet Union was the last major power to follow the suit. As a result, our country gained valuable time to prepare for a clash with the world’s most powerful army at that time.
