📩 The Question:

Due to the nature of my menstrual cycle, I may experience light and intermittent discharge (spotting) on the first day or the two days before the onset of menstruation. Then the usual menstrual blood comes down for approximately seven days, and then spotting continues for four to five days after the main seven days. Sometimes there is no difference in color from the beginning of the cycle to its end, and sometimes the entire discharge is dark brown in color.

In this case, how can a woman determine whether this spotting is considered part of menstruation or not? Especially since I have read fatwas stating that “the brown discharge that comes down after the end of menstruation and after performing ghusl is not given consideration and is not regarded as menstruation.”

In my case, it is very difficult to determine the beginning and the end of the cycle. So I ask for clarification and advice.

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Usāmah ibn Saʿūd al-ʿAmrī — may Allah preserve him.

Whatever occurs after purity is not considered anything.
So she is regarded as pure.

📩 The Question:

Could you please give my question priority?

I would like to ask regarding my current situation with menstruation: I gave birth to my baby two months ago, and my postnatal bleeding was normal and lasted forty days. Then after that, my menstrual cycle came for one week, then it stopped completely on the second day of Ramaḍān. So I fasted for two days, then blood resembling menstrual blood returned again.

So my question is: Is this blood considered menstruation, or should I begin praying considering it to be istiḥāḍah (irregular bleeding)?

I hope that my question is clear and understood, and I hope that you will answer it according to the knowledge you have.

May Allah reward you with abundant goodness.

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Jibrīl ibn Ḥamad ibn Ḥasan Buṣaylī, member of the Council of Senior Scholars in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia — may Allah preserve him.

It is not considered menstruation. You should perform ghusl, then pray and fast.

📩 The Question:

I am a woman who does not have a maḥram, and all the members of my family are Christians. I work as a childcare provider.

My manager at work is a Muslim woman and holds a teaching position, and her work sometimes requires travel and personal attendance for certain tasks such as meetings. Usually, her husband accompanies her, but this time his work does not allow him to do so, so I will accompany her because she will take the child with her, and her husband is not able to take care of him.

I would like to know the following:

Must I fast on that day?

Do I shorten the prayer?

The distance is approximately 270–280 km (around 3 hours by car) from her house,
and from my house approximately 255–265 km.

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Ali Al-Haddadi — may Allah preserve him.

This is travel in which breaking the fast is permissible.

📩 The Question:

I have a son who has type 1 diabetes, and sometimes his blood sugar level drops and he becomes weak, but he does not want to break his fast. Due to his health condition, it is also difficult for him to make up the fast afterward.

In this case, what should he do? And is it permissible for him to give fidyah in his situation?

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Ali Al-Haddadi — may Allah preserve him.

If he is not able to fast, then he should break the fast and make it up. And if the inability is continuous, then he should break the fast and feed one poor person for each day.

📩 The Question:

Is it permissible to use the siwāk during fasting?

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Usāmah ibn Saʿūd al-ʿAmrī — may Allah preserve him.

The siwāk is from the Sunnahs during fasting and other than it — at the beginning of the day, during it, and at its end — before zawāl and after it.

And the statement that it is disliked after zawāl is a weak statement, due to the generality of the aḥādīth encouraging the siwāk, and they did not differentiate between one time and another.

📩 The Question:

I usually pray Tarāwīḥ in the mosque, but on some days my mother asks me to take her somewhere, and she insists that I take her immediately after ifṭār. What is the ruling if I ask her to wait until I finish praying Tarāwīḥ and then take her?

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Usāmah ibn Saʿūd al-ʿAmrī — may Allah preserve him.

If you are able to combine taking her while still catching the Tarāwīḥ prayer, then that is preferable.

If you fear missing the prayer, then if she is someone who excuses and is tolerant, then pray and then take her.

But if she is not someone who excuses, then give precedence to taking her over performing the Tarāwīḥ prayer.

And Allah will compensate you with goodness due to your dutifulness to her.

Something similar to this was mentioned by our Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn — may Allah have mercy upon him — in Sharḥ al-Bukhārī in the story of Jurayj the monk:

“A woman called her son while he was in his prayer chamber. She said: O Jurayj. He said: O Allah, my mother and my prayer…”

Our Shaykh, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“Chapter: If the mother calls her son while he is in prayer — meaning, does he respond to her or not? This contains detail: If he is in an obligatory prayer, then he does not respond to her, because responding to her in that case would be disobedience to Allah. For when a person is in an obligatory prayer, it is forbidden for him to cut it short.

But if he is in a voluntary prayer, then he should respond to her and cut off the voluntary prayer, because responding to the mother is obligatory, and the voluntary prayer is Sunnah. However, if he knows that his mother is reasonable, and that if she knows he is in prayer she will excuse him, then he should let her know that he is in prayer — and how does he do that? He may say ‘Subḥān Allah,’ or clear his throat, or raise his voice in the recitation.

But if he knows that she will not excuse him even if he is in prayer — as is the case with some mothers — then he should cut off his prayer, because continuing in a voluntary act is not obligatory.”

And our issue is similar to that.

May Allah grant success to all in that which He loves and is pleased with.

📩 The Question:

I performed ghusl and began fasting yesterday on the eighth day because I no longer saw menstrual blood. But today I saw a very small amount of light pink in color on the tissue. So should I continue fasting, or is my fast not counted? Please inform me.

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Abū al-Faḍl al-Lībī — may Allah preserve him.

This is kudrah (discolored discharge), and it — when it is after menstruation — has the ruling of menstruation.

So she should not fast until she becomes completely pure.

📩 The Question:

My husband loves watching cricket matches, and he has begun to mix with people who have the same interest. In Ramadan they book a hall to watch cricket matches via a projector. They also spend time holding suḥūr and ifṭār gatherings for one another, and they say that this is from the aspect of the worship of feeding the fasting person. And now the matter has become a type of peer pressure, as they invite one another to ifṭār and suḥūr gatherings.

My husband feels that this matter helps him psychologically, and when I try to remind him about Ramadan and its virtues, he thinks that I am strict in my ideas and beliefs.

So how can a wife advise her husband in such an issue?

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Usāmah ibn Saʿūd al-ʿAmrī — may Allah preserve him.

The people of knowledge said:

Allah legislated for the people the fasting of the month of Ramadan, as a purification for their souls, and a cleansing for them from deviant manners and vile substances, and as training for the souls upon opposing desires in obedience to the Lord, and as subduing them to be patient upon leaving their cravings and inclinations. And from these cravings that divert from seriousness in obedience in Ramadan is spending time in these matters, which are not suitable to be in a month that Allah described with His statement: (“a limited number of days”) — so He made it one month of the year as a lightening from Him upon His servants and a mercy for them and a favor from Him. Thus it is fitting for the people to invest their times in acts of nearness and not to immerse themselves in permissible amusements, and that they be patient upon obedience to Allah, Glorified is He, magnifying His command and hoping for His reward in the month of Ramadan.

And that she advise him with various acts of worship,

from maintaining the Tarāwīḥ prayer along with attending gatherings of knowledge and increasing in the recitation of the Qur’an at night, as that has been established in the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās — may Allah be pleased with him: “Jibrīl would review the Qur’an with him at night.” When Jibrīl would meet him, he would be more generous in goodness than the sent wind, and he was the most generous of people, and he would be most generous in Ramadan.

So from his guidance ﷺ in the month of Ramadan was increasing in the various types of worship.

Thus it is incumbent upon the Muslim to take the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as an example in that, and this is generally not attainable with what was mentioned in the question of watching the likes of these amusements.

So the advice is that this wife should advise her husband with what was previously mentioned, with wisdom, gentleness, softness, and deliberateness, along with good character with him.

I ask Allah, by His favor and His generosity, for steadfastness upon obedience until death.
