📩 The Question:

I would like to please ask, In shaa Allaah, when should we hold the intention for fasting the month of Ramadan?

I personally made the intention to fast for the entire month of Ramadan before the month began. Is this okay?

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Muḥammad bin Ḥizām al-Baʿdānī — may Allah preserve him.

The correct view is that Ramaḍān and whatever is attached to it of that which continuity is stipulated in—such as fasting two consecutive months—a single intention at its beginning suffices, so long as he does not interrupt it due to an excuse, in which case he renews the intention.

And the evidence for that is the generality of his statement ﷺ: “Indeed, actions are only by intentions.” And also, it is one single act of worship, so one intention suffices for it.

Despite that, every Muslim carries forward his first intention in every night of Ramaḍān, for in every night he is resolved to fast the following day, and he takes suḥūr, and he is keen upon fasting the following day.

But if it were decreed that he slept that night and did not rise for suḥūr, then it is obligatory upon him to fast without suḥūr, if he is able to do so, because he is upon the intention of fasting the entire month completely.

For further benefit and clarification, our Shaykh also elaborated on this matter in his book Khulāṣat al-Aḥkām fī Masāʾil al-Ṣiyām (The Summary of the Rulings on the Issues of Fasting), where he addressed the question: Is Intention a Condition for Fasting?

His answer was as follows:

Fasting is not valid except with an intention, whether it is obligatory or voluntary, due to the statement of the Prophet ﷺ:

“Indeed, actions are only by intentions.”
(Agreed upon, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him.)
This is the position of most scholars.

The majority of scholars hold that specifying the type of fast is a condition, meaning that one must determine that they are fasting tomorrow as Ramaḍān, or as its makeup, or as an expiation, or as a vow, or as a voluntary fast.

This is the position of Mālik, Aḥmad, al-Shāfiʿī, Isḥāq, and Dāwūd, and they used as evidence his ﷺ statement:

“And each person will only have what he intended.”

However, specifying the type of fast is not a condition in voluntary fasting unless it is from the regular fasts, such as ʿArafah and ʿĀshūrāʾ, in which case specification is required.

As for Ramaḍān and other fasts that require continuity, Mālik, Aḥmad (in a narration), and Isḥāq (in a narration), and this was preferred by Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, held that:

A single intention at the beginning of the month suffices, unless it is interrupted by an excuse, in which case a new intention must be made.

This is the stronger view, and it was also preferred by Imām Ibn ʿUthaymīn, may Allah have mercy on him.

📩 The Question:

I have been suffering from a dental infection for a few weeks now. While waiting to start my treatment plan with the dentist on the 27th, I was prescribed painkillers to manage the pain.

Ramadan has now begun and I am fasting. I would like to know what I should do regarding the fasting day. For instance, this morning during Suhoor, I took my medication so that I wouldn't be in pain during the day, but the pain returned just a few hours later. It is Allah who puts the barakah (blessing) in the remedies, alhamdulillah.

However, if the pain becomes unbearable and too intense to handle, am I allowed to break my fast and fast it after ramadan? Baarakallahu feekum.

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Usāmah ibn Saʿūd al-ʿAmrī — may Allah preserve him.

Yes. If the pain becomes severe, it is permissible for her to break the fast, and she should make up one day in its place after the month of Ramadan, as Allah, Glorified is He, said:

“And whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number (of days which one did not observe fasts must be made up) from other days.” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:184)

📩 The Question:

I am currently 3 months post partum and exclusively breastfeeding my baby. How can I tell the difference between just “Ramadan hardship” and being unable to continue fasting? What if I feel like “it’s not bad enough to leave fasting”?..

Last year I tried durnt my pregnancy despite my hyperemesis gravidarum (pregnancy sickness where I threw up more than 10 times a day) and I got hospitalised in the end because I felt so bad ‘giving up’..

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Usāmah ibn Saʿūd al-ʿAmrī — may Allah preserve him.

It is upon the Muslim not to throw himself, nor those under his care, into destruction. And the criterion for fear regarding the pregnant woman or the breastfeeding woman, or their child, is harm. The jurists mentioned by way of example their statement: “That the pregnant woman fears miscarriage, or the breastfeeding woman fears that the milk will decrease such that the child perishes.”

My dear sisters,

Do not let Ramaḍān be consumed by your kitchen.

In this magnificent month, whose hours are more precious than gold and whose moments cannot be replaced, how many blessed portions of time are lost over stoves and countertops — preparing food that would suffice a nation, not merely a family.

Some sisters imagine that the true competition of Ramaḍān lies in perfecting dishes, multiplying varieties, and adorning the table with abundance. They strive in recipes as though this were the arena of the month. Yet the real race of Ramaḍān is not in flavours, but in forgiveness; not in presentation, but in prayer; not in abundance of food, but in abundance of remembrance and recitation of the Quran.

There is no doubt that excessive preoccupation with cooking wastes precious time, exhausts the body, and weakens one’s worship. When half the day is spent in the kitchen, the Qur’an remains unopened. And when night arrives, fatigue settles heavily upon the limbs, and the soul finds itself too weary to stand in prayer.

Prepare little, my sisters, for in little there is blessing. Let your effort be moderate and sincere. Intend by your cooking the worship of Allah — serving your husband and children, feeding those who fast — and you will be rewarded for it. But beware of turning your kitchen into a place of competition, display, and unnecessary extravagance.

Remember that you are not cut off from goodness even while you prepare food. You can listen to the Qur’an. You can reflect. You can remember Allah. You can transform ordinary moments into acts of devotion. Let your kitchen become a place of reward, not a place of loss.

Ramaḍān is a guest that comes swiftly and departs swiftly. Do not allow it to leave while your hands were busy but your heart was absent. Guard your hours. Preserve your strength. Direct your striving toward what will elevate your ranks and illuminate your grave.

May Allah grant you wisdom in your time, blessing in your homes, and acceptance in your worship.

When Is It Better to Recite the Qur’an in Ramadan — During the Day or at Night?

Ibn Rajab, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

In the hadith of Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, from her father ﷺ: “That he informed her that Jibril, peace be upon him, used to review the Qur’an with him once every year (during Ramadan), and that he reviewed it with him in the year of his death twice.” And in the hadith of Ibn Abbas: “That the mutual study between him and Jibril used to take place at night (in Ramadan).”

So it indicates the recommendation of increasing recitation in Ramadan at night; for indeed at night distractions cease, aspirations gather, and the heart and tongue come together upon reflection, as He, the Most High, said: “Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allah).”

📩 The Question:

I have a question regarding fasting, as of now I am in Saudi Arabia, and will plan to travel back home to Australia on the last 15 days of Ramadhan.

Do I follow the Eid in Australia?

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Usāmah ibn Saʿūd al-ʿAmrī — may Allah preserve him.

The principle in this matter is that the Muslim follows the country in which the month began for him (addition by translator: i.e., whatever country he was in when entering Ramadan, then he follows them for the rest of the month).

📩 The Question:

I would like to know the ruling of fasting for the breastfeeding women.

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Muḥammad bin Ḥizām al-Baʿdānī — may Allah preserve him.

As for what relates to the breastfeeding woman and the pregnant woman, then the correct view concerning them is that if she fears for herself and it becomes difficult upon her, or she fears for her child, then she may break the fast, and upon her is making up the fast, and there is no feeding required from her; rather, upon her is making up the fast, because she is in the ruling of the sick person.

And Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said:

“And whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number (of days which one did not observe fasts must be made up) from other days.”
(Surah al-Baqarah 2:184)

And it is established from Anas ibn Malik al-Ka‘bi, may Allah be pleased with him, as reported by Abu Dawud, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has lifted from the pregnant woman and the breastfeeding woman the fasting, and He has also lifted from the traveler the fasting and half of the prayer.”

And what is known is that the lifting from the traveler is a lifting of performance and not a lifting even from making up; the traveler must make up the fast, and likewise the breastfeeding woman and the pregnant woman must make up the fast when Allah makes that easy for her. And with Allah is success.

Imām ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“And it was said:

The example of the month of Ramadan among the months is like the heart within the chests, and like the prophets among mankind, and like the Sacred Sanctuary among the lands.

For the Sacred Sanctuary — the accursed Dajjāl is prevented from it, and in the month of Ramadan the rebellious devils are chained.

And the prophets are intercessors for the criminals, and the month of Ramadan is an intercessor for the fasting ones. And the heart is adorned with the light of knowledge and faith, and the month of Ramadan is adorned with the light of the recitation of the Qur’an.

So whoever is not forgiven for him in the month of Ramadan — then in which month will he be forgiven?! So let the servant repent to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, before the doors of repentance are closed, and let him repent to Him, Mighty and Majestic, before the time of turning in repentance passes, and let him weep before the time of weeping and mercy comes to an end.”

📩 The Question:

What is the ruling on women using menstrual preventatives (pills) in order to fast the entire month of Ramaḍān?

📝 The Answer:

Answered by Shaykh Muḥammad bin Ḥizām al-Baʿdānī — may Allah preserve him.

These pills affect some women with a clear effect, and she finds severe pains. And the Prophet ﷺ says: “There is to be no harm and no reciprocating harm.”

So whoever experiences pains because of them, it is not permissible for her to cause herself illness and pain. She must refrain.

And whoever is not harmed when she uses them for one month, and if some pain occurs it is something light, then it does not reach in her case the level of prohibition. However, it is disliked because she may expose herself to severe pain.

Based upon this, it is disliked, except in the case of the one for whom it has become clear that she is harmed by it; then in her case it is prohibited.

So it revolves between dislike and prohibition. And Allah knows best.
